I’ve sailed with a fair few cruise lines over the years – from the big family favourites to more boutique-style ships – and every line has its own strengths.

But the one that surprised me the most might well have been Celebrity Cruises.

Not because I wasn’t expecting a good experience. I knew that a Celebrity Cruises ship was going to be good.

I just didn’t realise quite how good – because for all their talk of the ways in which Celebrity Cruises stands out, I genuinely believe it delivers. Let me tell you why…

AMAZING DEALS WAITING FOR YOU

1. Ships That Feel Like Floating Hotels

One of the first things that hits you on a Celebrity ship is just how different they look and feel.

The design is open, airy and clean-lined, with more of a boutique hotel vibe than anything overly nautical. And yes, the newer Edge-class ships are especially shiny, but even the older ships have a contemporary, classy feel.

You won’t find fake palm trees or bright plastic chairs here – instead, think clever lighting, stylish neutral tones, and beautifully curated spaces like the Grand Plaza or Eden, which are as good-looking as anything you’d find on land.

The Magic Carpet – a cantilevered platform that moves up and down the side of the ship – isn’t just there to look cool (though it does).

It doubles up as a tender platform, bar, and even dining space depending on the time of day. It’s smart design that serves a purpose, which I really appreciate.

Even the cabins feel more thoughtful. The Infinite Verandas on Edge-class ships, where the window drops down at the touch of a button, give you that balcony feel but with more usable indoor space.

It’s little things like that which show they’ve properly rethought how a cruise ship should work, rather than just repeating the same formula.

2. Food That’s Genuinely Worth Talking About

Let’s be honest – food is one of the best parts of cruising.

But while most cruise lines manage to serve up good meals, Celebrity consistently delivers genuinely great ones.

You can eat really well across the board, from the main dining room to the poolside grill – but where they really shine is in their speciality restaurants.

Le Petit Chef is a fun one, where animated chefs are projected onto your table before the real dish arrives – it’s quirky, yes, but the food still holds its own.

And then there’s Eden Restaurant, where I enjoyed one of the best meals I’ve ever had! It offers innovative dishes, artful presentation, and an atmosphere that manages to be both relaxed and special at the same time.

But it’s not just about being fancy. One thing I really like is how well they cater to different preferences and dietary needs, especially as a vegan myself. The buffet is one of the biggest I’ve ever seen and everything is labelled perfectly.

Whether you’re looking for lighter meals, plant-based options, or just a break from the usual heavy cruise fare, Celebrity has plenty of choice.

Blu, the restaurant exclusive to AquaClass guests, is a great example – beautifully cooked food that’s lighter and fresher, but still packed with flavour. Perfect if you’re after something a bit more balanced without feeling like you’re missing out.

3. Wellness That Feels Thoughtful, Not Tacked On

A lot of cruise lines talk about wellness these days, but with Celebrity, it actually feels like part of the overall experience – not just a buzzword.

The whole vibe onboard is more peaceful and considered, which really helps if you’re using your holiday to properly switch off and recharge.

Staying in an AquaClass cabin means you get access to the spa’s thermal suite, daily water in your cabin, wellness-focused menus, and even yoga mats.

AquaClass Sky Suites

It’s a small shift in mindset from the usual cruise routine – instead of “how much can I eat?” it becomes more about how good you can feel by the end of the trip.

The fitness centres are better equipped than most I’ve seen at sea, and group classes are actually worth turning up for.

Even if you’re not someone who’s usually into spa days or gym classes, it’s nice to know the option’s there – and that it’s been designed to feel like part of the experience, not an extra you have to go hunting for.

4. A Grown-Up Vibe Without Being Boring

This is one of the things that really sets Celebrity apart. The atmosphere onboard is calm and grown-up, without tipping into stuffy or overly formal. It’s smart casual all the way – no strict dress codes or captain’s dinners unless you want them – and that suits a lot of modern cruisers.

You won’t find water parks, roller coasters or cartoon characters on a Celebrity ship – and for a lot of people that’s a major plus.

It’s not that kids aren’t welcome, but it’s clearly not a ship that’s designed around them.

The crowd tends to skew more adult – couples, groups of friends, solo travellers – and the entertainment is geared accordingly. Think live jazz, silent discos, or acoustic sessions on the rooftop at sunset.

There’s still fun to be had – the Martini Bar in the Grand Plaza gets lively in the evenings – but it’s never rowdy or overwhelming. You can go out, have a great meal, enjoy a drink or two and a show, and still feel like you’re somewhere relaxed and well-paced.

But if you do love to party, be sure to look out for the silent disco – it’s one of the best at sea!

For people like me, who want their cruise to be a break from the noise rather than more of it, this hits a sweet spot.

5. The Retreat: A Suite Experience Done Right

If you’ve ever looked at the “ship within a ship” offerings on other cruise lines and wondered if they’re worth it, Celebrity’s Retreat is a good place to start.

It’s their suite experience – and while yes, it comes with a higher price tag, it also delivers something that feels genuinely special.

While I haven’t stayed there myself yet, I did meet a lovely lady who kindly showed me her suite, and Celebrity Cruises allowed me to look around the VIP areas.

Bird's-eye view of a cruise ship's exclusive retreat area, featuring a modern design with luxurious lounging spaces, a private pool, cabanas, and a distinctive geometric glass dome. The ship's deck blends sleek architecture and tropical elements against the backdrop of the ocean.

Retreat guests get access to Luminae, a private restaurant with menus designed by a Michelin-starred chef, plus a dedicated Retreat lounge for drinks and snacks, and an exclusive sun deck that’s quiet, beautifully designed, and never crowded.

The suites themselves are stunning – lots of space, high-end touches, and some of the best bathrooms at sea.

What I like is that The Retreat doesn’t feel flashy or over-the-top. It’s stylish and serene, not showy. And because it’s fully integrated into the ship, you still get access to all the usual restaurants, bars and entertainment without being cut off in your own bubble.

It’s perfect if you want more space and comfort, or are celebrating something special – and in my opinion, it does a better job than similar offerings on other premium lines, which can sometimes feel a bit disconnected or inconsistent.

6. Fresh Ships That Just Feel Better

There’s something about sailing on a newer ship that just lifts the whole experience – and Celebrity has one of the youngest, most modern fleets among the big-name cruise lines.

The Edge-class ships in particular are a real step forward in design, layout and technology.

Celebrity Apex Resort Deck

You can see the difference everywhere – wider corridors, better flow around the ship, more outdoor space, and smart little touches like the mobile app that lets you open your cabin door, check your daily schedule or even control the lights and temperature. Everything feels that bit more seamless and thought-through.

They’re also making big strides in terms of sustainability – with features like more efficient engines, water treatment systems, and even solar panels in some areas.

It’s reassuring to know that you’re travelling with a line that’s thinking ahead, rather than just refreshing older ships and adding more bells and whistles.

7. Destinations That Go Off the Beaten Track

While Celebrity definitely does the cruise staples well – think Greek islands, the Caribbean, Alaska – they also offer some really interesting itineraries that go a bit beyond the usual suspects.

Whether it’s a more in-depth tour of South America, a journey through the Middle East, or exploring the Galápagos on a small expedition ship, they’re not afraid to go off the beaten track.

Cedlebrity Flora

Even on more familiar routes, you’ll often find slightly longer stays in port, or overnight stops in places like Venice or Istanbul, which give you a chance to properly explore rather than just rushing round in a few hours.

In fact, I would argue that Celebrity Cruises is one of the better choices for the Mediterranean in particular – you get an almost small-ship style experience in terms of visiting ports the ‘big lines’ don’t, yet with all the conveniences of a mid-sized ship.

Celebrity Ascent

Their shore excursions also tend to be better curated than some I’ve seen – with a focus on local culture, smaller group sizes, and more variety. And if you’re not into organised tours, it’s good to know their port choices often make it easy to do your own thing too.

Final Thoughts

Celebrity Cruises doesn’t shout the loudest – and that’s probably one of the reasons it appeals to me. It’s not trying to be everything to everyone.

Instead, it offers a modern, thoughtful cruise experience that focuses on style, comfort and quality without feeling formal or overdone. If you’re after a cruise that feels relaxed but refined, modern but not flashy, and grown-up without being boring – Celebrity might just be the one that clicks for you too.

    Hello Jenni!
Back in May you recommended a New England cruise on Enchanted Princess (Sept 4th to 13th). My daughter is a vegan & the slop served up on the vegan menu is beyond bad; it’s truly disgusting & the formal menu tonight was probably worse. As a fellow vegan, she is truly disappointed with your recommendation & is actually depressed & feeling ill on this cruise.

Hi Michael. I’m so sorry to hear that your daughter has such an experience. I’ve sailed with Princess several times and not experienced that, including on Enchanted Princess. I hope she feels better soon and that the onboard team are able to help. Jenni
