I thought I knew what to expect from Celebrity Cruises, but it turns out, I was wrong on more than a few counts!
I went in expecting polished ships and good food, but what I didn’t expect was just how different the overall experience would feel compared to other cruise lines I’ve sailed with.

From the dining and drinks to the atmosphere onboard, Celebrity quietly does things in a way that most people don’t really talk about. It looks premium, feels relaxed and somehow manages to avoid both the party-ship chaos and the stuffy luxury vibe.
There were a few moments on board where I genuinely stopped and thought, I wasn’t expecting this at all. Some were pleasant surprises, one or two made me rethink how I’d book next time, and one in particular really changed how I see Celebrity as a brand. And that’s the bit most people don’t tell you before you book.

1. The Sheer Choice And Quality Of Food
I expected the food to be good on Celebrity, but I didn’t expect quite this level of choice. The buffet is one of the biggest I’ve ever seen at sea, and it never felt repetitive!

There was loads of variety, good-quality ingredients and plenty of things cooked fresh rather than just sitting under heat lamps.
You know the buffet is good when you want everything and your plate comes away looking like this…

What really surprised me was how many other dining options there were on top of that. For example, the Eden Cafe is gorgeous spot to head to for a healthy breakfast or light lunch.

Instead of a single main dining room, I found that there were several main dining rooms to choose from, each with its own feel and distinctive menu. There’s no need to book, you can just turn up at whichever restaurant you fancy, which I love!

It made dining feel far more flexible and less routine. You could keep things casual one night and a bit more polished the next without paying extra. For a line that sits outside the luxury bracket, the overall food experience felt impressively elevated.
2. The Drinks Package Has A Clear Sweet Spot
Celebrity’s drinks packages aren’t one size fits all, and that caught me off guard at first.
I got the Classic drink package included in my cruise fare, so that’s what I went with. However, this package only covers drinks up to a certain value, which means some cocktails, wines and premium spirits come with a supplement. It’s not a bad thing, but it’s worth knowing upfront.

What surprised me was how quickly the Premium package started to make sense. I spoke to a few regular cruisers who told me what good value it is and that they always pay to upgrade.
If you enjoy trying different cocktails, nicer wines or premium spirits, upgrading gives you full freedom to order without constantly checking prices.
It completely changed the experience from being mindful to just enjoying what you fancy. For me, that peace of mind was well worth it, especially on sea days.

I like it that Celebrity Cruises makes it easy to tailor things to how you actually drink, rather than forcing everyone into the same mould. If you like beer, house wine and simple cocktails, you’ll be fine with the Classic Package. But if you want your pick of the menu, upgrading is worth it.

3. The Artwork Around The Ship Is Genuinely Impressive
I didn’t expect to be stopping in corridors to look at art. Usually it’s not my thing really. But that’s exactly what happened. Celebrity Apex is full of the moset incredible sculptures!

Celebrity ships are filled with giant pieces of art, and it’s not just generic prints or filler pieces. There’s a real mix of bold, playful and striking works that add personality to the space.
It gives the ship a more gallery-like feel, especially in public areas, and makes wandering around SO interesting.
You notice new pieces each day, and it adds to that modern, design-led atmosphere Celebrity is known for. It felt thoughtful rather than overdone, and definitely helped the ship feel more like a stylish hotel than a traditional cruise ship.
4. A Relaxed Atmosphere Without Feeling Flat
One of the biggest surprises was just how chilled the onboard vibe was, without ever feeling dull. It was relaxed but not sleepy, and lively without being rowdy.
There were barely any kids onboard, even on a short cruise, which made a huge difference to the overall feel.

The crowd skewed a bit younger than I’d seen on other cruises, with lots of couples in their 40s and 50s as well as groups of friends.
During the day it was peaceful and chilled, but come evening the energy picked up. The nightclub was still pumping for those who wanted it and the silent disco was hands down the best one I’ve ever been to.

Celebrity Cruises seems to strike the perfect balance between fun, and relaxation, and I love that.
5. Theatre Shows That Really Raised The Bar
I’ve seen a lot of cruise ship shows over the years, so my expectations were fairly measured. Celebrity completely blew them out of the water. The theatre productions were some of the best I’ve ever seen at sea, both creatively and technically.

The special effects were impressive, the acrobatics were genuinely jaw-dropping, and the whole thing felt more like a West End style production than a cruise show.
It wasn’t just singing and dancing, but a full visual experience that kept the audience hooked. Even people who usually skip the shows were talking about them afterwards, which says a lot.

6. Surprisingly Good For Special Diets
If you have dietary requirements, Celebrity really stands out. Everything was clearly labelled, which instantly took away a lot of the usual guesswork and awkward questions. As a vegan, this is something I’m really conscious of and it’s definitely not something I can say about every cruise line!

Plus there was a wide range of options across venues, not just one token choice tucked away on the menu.
The highlight for me was the eight-course plant-based tasting menu in Eden, which stood out as being one of the best meals I’ve ever had. It felt creative, thoughtful and properly indulgent.

Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, gluten free or managing allergies, Celebrity makes it feel easy and inclusive, not limiting.

7. The Perfect Middle Ground Between Mainstream And Luxury
What surprised me most overall is how well Celebrity sits between mass-market and luxury cruising. It really feels like a sweet spot. The ships are sleek, modern and beautifully designed, with a luxury hotel vibe rather than a typical cruise feel.

Everything from the lighting to the finishes feels considered, and there’s a sense of refinement without stiffness.
You don’t get the formality or eye-watering prices of true luxury lines, but you also don’t feel like you’re on a conveyor belt holiday.

Celebrity manages to feel polished, stylish and relaxed all at once, which is a hard balance to get right, but they absolutely nail it.

Final Word
After sailing with Celebrity for the first time, what surprised me most wasn’t just one standout feature, but how consistently everything came together. The food, entertainment, atmosphere and design all felt thoughtfully done, without tipping into being overly formal or intimidating.
Celebrity feels like a cruise line that knows exactly who it’s for. It’s relaxed but stylish, lively without being chaotic, and refined without feeling unapproachable. For anyone who enjoys good food, quality entertainment and a calmer onboard vibe, it really does hit a sweet spot.
If you’ve been curious about Celebrity but weren’t sure if it was worth the step up from mainstream cruising, my experience suggests it absolutely can be. Just go in knowing it might surprise you in ways you didn’t expect.

I went with a friend on my first ever cruise back in Nov 2022 with Celebrity and knew then I’d be comfortable cruising solo with them – I do solo trips but hadn’t gone solo on a cruise. I took plunge to book a solo Infinite Balcony on Apex for Jan 2025 and loved my 7 nights cruising to Key West, Turks & Caicos etc. The 4 different dining rooms were of fantastic quality that while you could do Speciality dining if you wanted some nights I’m not sure I’d be in a rush to next time. The buffet best I’d ever seen – had lunch most days there. Drinks Package I agree when good deals arise upgrade to Premium so you don’t really have to think – I love a Whispering Angel Rose with dinner and the Martini Bar was where the action was in middle of ship in evenings. Cafe Albacio had amazing coffee and treats that it became my stable mid afternoon spot to people watch. Plenty variety on their shows – timed for either pre/post dinner. Cabins fantastic especially the size of walk in glass shower. Along with good deals on Premium Drinks look for deals to upgrade from 24 hour Classic WiFi to Premium as I found speeds excellent and could use social media no problem. Another thing that also impressed me was the variety of current up to date complimentary in room movies. I sometimes put a movie on getting ready for evening or when I went to bed. It’s all these little touches that make Celebrity right for me.
I absolutely agree with you out of all the lines I have sailed Celebrity is my go to line. I have sailed all three classes and love them all for various reasons. I am Elite Plus which takes a lot of getting too but the perks are great! Cheaper wifi, free washing bag, special breakfasts and free drinks !
We celebrated our golden wedding with a cruise on Celebrity Eclipse in 2014. I must say my impressions agree with you with one extra that I believe is no longer there was a glassblowing display. We attended many times as it was so unusual at sea to be watching men making beautiful items and giving one passenger watching a chance to win a piece completely free. Wish they sailed form Southampton regularly.
