A 44-year-old woman who went overboard from Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas in the Mediterranean has been found alive following an extensive search and rescue operation involving the Greek Coast Guard and other vessels.

The woman, identified in Greek media reports as a citizen of El Salvador, was rescued during the early hours of Saturday, 10th October 2026, after going missing from the cruise ship on Friday morning.

Odyssey of the Seas

Passengers aboard Odyssey of the Seas have reported that the woman was taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia but was otherwise in a stable condition. According to several guests, the ship’s captain confirmed the successful rescue in an announcement at approximately 10am local time on Saturday.

One passenger said the woman had been able to walk independently after being brought ashore by rescue boat, while another reported that the captain had informed guests she was doing well.

The rescue brings a positive conclusion to an emergency that saw Odyssey of the Seas spend approximately 14 hours participating in search operations before abandoning its scheduled visit to Naples and heading directly towards Civitavecchia, Italy.

Woman Found After Extensive Search In The Ionian Sea

The emergency began on Friday, 9th October, when a woman was reported overboard from Odyssey of the Seas at approximately 6am.

The Royal Caribbean vessel was sailing through the Ionian Sea, having departed Mykonos as part of a seven-night Greek Isles itinerary that began in Civitavecchia on 4th October.

According to Greek media reports citing the Hellenic Coast Guard, the incident occurred approximately 72 nautical miles southwest of Zakynthos.

Odyssey of the Seas changed course and began searching the surrounding waters, with assistance reportedly provided by the Greek Coast Guard, a helicopter and nearby vessels.

Passengers described seeing the ship repeatedly circling the search area as the operation continued throughout Friday.

The captain reportedly informed guests of the situation over the ship’s public address system at approximately 10am, several hours after the woman was first reported missing.

Royal Caribbean subsequently confirmed that a search and rescue operation had been launched.

A spokesperson for the cruise line said:

“We immediately launched a search and rescue effort and are working with authorities. Our Care Team is actively providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

That statement was issued before news emerged that the woman had been found alive.

According to passengers discussing the incident on Reddit, Greek news reports indicated that a cargo vessel had located the woman conscious and responsive shortly before 1am on Saturday.

Other passengers subsequently reported that the captain had confirmed the rescue occurred at approximately 2am to 2.30am. The differing times have not been independently reconciled.

Several guests said they received an official update at around 10am on Saturday confirming that the woman had survived and was receiving medical treatment.

One passenger wrote: “Our cruise captain confirmed she was found alive, is at a mainland hospital and is doing well.”

Another passenger reported: “Captain just updated she was found alive and was taken to a hospital, walked off on her own accord, she is fine other than hypothermia”

The accounts indicate that the woman was conscious and mobile following her rescue, although the full extent of her medical assessment has not been disclosed.

The circumstances surrounding how she entered the water remain unclear.

An earlier unverified passenger account suggested that the woman had taken an inflatable life ring before going overboard. However, this has not been confirmed by Royal Caribbean or the Greek authorities, and it remains unknown whether the incident was accidental or deliberate.

Odyssey Of The Seas Skips Naples And Returns To Italy

The search and rescue operation also resulted in a significant itinerary change for passengers aboard Odyssey of the Seas.

Odyssey of the Seas

The ship was originally scheduled to visit Naples on Saturday, 10th October, before returning to Civitavecchia, the port serving Rome, on Sunday, 11th October.

However, the prolonged search meant that the final scheduled port of call was cancelled.

One passenger aboard the vessel said the ship had remained involved in rescue operations for approximately 14 hours before resuming its journey towards Italy late on Friday evening.

“As of 11pm last evening (Friday evening) we had been conducting search and rescue for about 14 hours before we started moving towards Civittivecchia (Rome’s port),” the passenger wrote on Reddit.

The same passenger confirmed that guests had been informed that Naples would be skipped.

Other passengers also reported that ship-tracking information showed Odyssey of the Seas heading directly towards Civitavecchia rather than continuing with its original itinerary.

The decision means guests will miss the final port visit of their seven-night cruise, although the vessel was already due to complete its sailing in Civitavecchia on Sunday.

There has been no confirmed announcement of an early disembarkation or a change to the scheduled end date of the cruise.

Some passengers expressed concerns about the potential impact on onward travel arrangements, particularly for international guests with flights departing Italy after the voyage.

Reports from aboard the ship also indicated that weather conditions in the area were deteriorating as the vessel made its way back towards Italy.

It is not yet clear whether the cancellation of Naples was solely a consequence of the time spent searching or whether weather conditions also influenced the decision.

The incident comes shortly after another major cruise ship search operation in September 2026, when a 56-year-old passenger went overboard from Carnival Panorama.

In that case, the US Coast Guard suspended its search after more than 41 hours without locating the missing passenger.

The outcome aboard Odyssey of the Seas has been markedly different, with the woman reportedly surviving many hours in open water before being located and brought to safety.

Royal Caribbean has not publicly disclosed further details about her condition or the circumstances of the incident.

For passengers aboard Odyssey of the Seas, the latest update confirms that the search ended with the woman alive and receiving hospital care, even as the ship continues towards Italy without making its planned stop in Naples.
