Why I Fell In Love With Ambassador Cruise Line

I’ve sailed with a lot of cruise lines over the years.

Some have giant ships packed with attractions. Some focus on luxury. Others are all about families, nightlife or squeezing as much entertainment as possible into every square foot of deck space.

So when I first sailed with Ambassador Cruise Line, I wasn’t expecting it to become one of the cruise lines I keep finding myself drawn back to. In fact, on paper, it’s probably not the sort of cruise line that should suit me at all.

The ships are smaller, and they’re a bit older. There aren’t any flashy headline attractions. Nobody is building YouTube videos around the world’s tallest anything.

And yet, the more time I spend on Ambassador’s ships, the more I appreciate what they’re doing. I also appreciate a good special offer too…

It Doesn’t Feel Like It’s Chasing Trends

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that a lot of cruise lines end up feeling remarkably similar.

The same attractions. The same speciality restaurants. The same push towards bigger ships carrying more and more passengers and some attention-grabbing new feature you’d never have guessed you’d find on a cruise ship.

Ambassador has never really gone down that route, though. It’s not their style.

When you step onboard, the focus is still very much on the traditional cruise experience. Good food. Friendly service. Comfortable surroundings. Interesting itineraries.

That might not sound revolutionary, but I think that’s part of the appeal. At least, that’s what I’ve found.

The cruise line knows exactly what it wants to be, and it doesn’t seem particularly interested in copying everyone else. There’s a confidence in that, which I like.

You won’t find rollercoasters, surf simulators or endless queues for the latest attraction. What you will find is a ship where people are reading books in lounges, chatting over coffee, listening to live music or simply watching the sea go by.

Honestly, sometimes that’s exactly what I want from a holiday.

The Atmosphere Is Hard To Explain Until You Experience It

Whenever somebody asks me what Ambassador is like, I usually end up talking about the atmosphere before anything else.

The ships never feel frantic. That’s not because nothing is happening. Quite the opposite. There’s always something going on, whether it’s guest speakers, dance classes, quizzes, theatre performances, live music or one of the many activities listed in the daily programme.

But at the same time, nobody seems to be rushing anywhere. Sea days especially feel genuinely relaxing. Finding a seat isn’t a challenge, and ordering a drink doesn’t require military planning.

I think a lot of that comes down to the size of the ships. Ambience carries around 1,400 guests, while Ambition and Renaissance are even smaller. That’s enough people to create a lively atmosphere without ever feeling crowded.

You quickly start recognising faces too. Not in an awkward way. Just enough that the ship starts to feel familiar after a couple of days.

The Crew Really Do Make A Difference

Every cruise line talks about service. It’s one of those things you’ll see mentioned in almost every brochure and every advert. But there are some cruise lines where you genuinely notice it, and Ambassador is one of them.

On all of my Ambassador cruises, the crew stood out for all the right reasons. They were friendly without being overbearing, helpful without feeling scripted and always seemed happy to stop for a chat. The smaller ships probably help here too.

You tend to see the same crew members throughout your sailing, whether that’s in a bar, restaurant or lounge. By the end of the cruise, they often know what you drink, where you like to sit and whether you’re the type of person who wants a conversation or just wants to quietly enjoy a coffee.

Those little interactions don’t sound like a big deal when you’re booking a cruise. They’re certainly not the sort of thing that makes it onto a brochure cover. But they make a huge difference once you’re onboard.

It Still Feels Like Cruising

This is probably the hardest thing to put into words and really explain to someone who hasn’t tried it before.

Cruising has changed a lot over the years. Some changes have been brilliant, but others have quietly pushed a few traditions into the background.

What I like about Ambassador is that it still embraces many of the things people originally fell in love with about cruising.

You’ll find afternoon tea. Gala dinners. Guest speakers. Dance hosts. Theatre productions. Formal nights if you enjoy them. Even find the famous Baked Alaska parade lives on!

Some people might think those things sound a bit old-fashioned. I probably would have thought that myself years ago.

But the reality is that they help create a sense of occasion. They turn an ordinary sea day into something a little more memorable and give the cruise its own personality.

There’s a reason these traditions survived for decades in the first place and I am happy that there’s a cruise line keeping them alive, but in a way that still feels modern.

Cruising Feels Surprisingly Easy

One of Ambassador’s biggest strengths is how straightforward everything feels. The cruise line sails from regional ports around the UK, which means many guests can avoid a long drive to Southampton before their holiday has even started.

For a lot of people, that makes a huge difference. Being able to board in Liverpool, Newcastle, Bristol, Portsmouth, Dundee or Tilbury often turns embarkation day from a stressful travel day into part of the holiday itself.

Once onboard, things stay refreshingly simple too. The onboard currency is pounds. Drinks are reasonably priced. The ships are easy to navigate. You don’t need a phone app to reserve every activity or spend the first three days figuring out where everything is.

I know some people enjoy all the bells and whistles that come with newer ships, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. But there is something quite refreshing about boarding a ship and feeling like you can properly switch off.

The Value Is Better Than Most People Realise

When people talk about value, they often focus entirely on the headline fare. Which is understandable, because it’s the thing you see when you’re browsing cruise websites and trying to decide which cruise to book.

But actually, I think it’s much more important to look at what happens after you’ve boarded. And this is another area where Ambassador impressed me.

The food is excellent. Drinks are reasonably priced. Access to the thermal suite is included. The speciality restaurants cost a fraction of what many other cruise lines charge, and even the shore excursions are often surprisingly competitive.

None of those things individually make or break a cruise, but they do add up.

I’ve been on cruises where it feels like every activity, every meal upgrade and every little extra comes with another charge attached. Ambassador doesn’t feel like that. You can absolutely spend extra if you want to, but there’s far less pressure to do so.

So Why Did I Fall In Love With Ambassador?

Because the more cruises I take, the more I appreciate cruise lines that know exactly what they are.

Ambassador isn’t trying to be the biggest cruise line. It isn’t trying to be the flashiest. It certainly isn’t trying to appeal to absolutely everybody.

Instead, it focuses on offering comfortable ships, friendly service, excellent value and a genuinely relaxing holiday experience.

And like I say, these qualities don’t always stand out when you’re browsing cruise websites or comparing brochures. They only become obvious once you’re onboard.

And I think that’s probably why so many people who try Ambassador once end up sailing with them again. There’s no single feature that makes people fall in love with the cruise line.

It’s all the little things working together.
