You’d be surprised how many people spend a cruise holiday sticking to the same routine every day. Breakfast, pool, dinner, show, bed… repeat.

The thing is, Ambassador includes plenty of little extras and experiences that passengers either don’t know about or simply forget to use.
Some of them are hiding in plain sight. Others sound a bit old-fashioned until you try them and suddenly realise you’re planning your whole day around them. And there are a few that can make your holiday feel more special without spending a penny extra.
Afternoon Tea Feels Like A Hidden Event
Afternoon tea has a habit of flying under the radar, especially when people are busy heading ashore or filling up at lunch.
But it’s one of those small cruise traditions that’s worth slowing down for. Expect finger sandwiches, cakes and sweet treats, usually served with tea and coffee in a relaxed setting.
It’s not quite the same as paying for an elaborate shoreside afternoon tea experience – and that’s part of the charm. You can simply wander in, grab a seat and enjoy a quieter part of the day without worrying about bookings or extra charges. It’s a really nice little treat – well recommended!
The Thermal Suite Escape Most Passengers Walk Past
Some people walk into the spa area once and never go back. Others discover the thermal suite and wonder why they left it so long.

I think there’s this assumption from some people that “spa” = “upcharge” but having free access to the thermal suite is definitely a perk worth enjoying. Sauna, steam room and relaxation rooms with ocean view – absolute bliss!

Your Cruise Fare Already Includes The Gym
Cruise ship gyms often have a strange reputation. People either imagine they’re packed with fitness fanatics or convince themselves they’ll never use them.

I’m someone who used to think like that. And now, I’m usually in the gym on most cruises. Because the reality is usually much more relaxed. If you fancy balancing out a few desserts or just want to stretch your legs on a sea day, the fitness centre is already there waiting.
It’s especially good if you don’t have a gym membership at home – take advantage of the free one on the ship for an hour or two while you can!
The Pools Aren’t Just For Sunny Days
Lots of passengers glance outside, see a bit of cloud and decide pool time is off the agenda.

But hot tubs can be surprisingly enjoyable even when the weather isn’t perfect. Sitting in warm bubbling water while sailing past dramatic coastlines feels very different from your local leisure centre.
The pools themselves can also become quieter at unexpected times of day if you don’t fancy battling for a sun lounger.
The Walking Track Might Become Your Favourite Spot
I know a lot of people who discover the walking track halfway through a cruise and then wonder why they ignored it for days.
It’s not just about exercise. Early mornings can be peaceful, evenings can be beautiful and sea days often give you endless ocean views that somehow never become boring.
Even if you’re not counting steps, a slow lap or two can become a surprisingly nice daily habit.
Guest Speakers Can Be Surprisingly Fascinating
You might see a lecture listed in the daily programme and assume it sounds suspiciously like being back at school.

Then you wander in and discover someone talking about well-known explorers, history, destinations or unusual life experiences.
Guest speakers can become one of those unexpected cruise highlights because they break up the day and give you something different from the usual entertainment schedule. Ambassador has some excellent ones, too. Look out for some properly famous names on select cruises!
Don’t Head To Bed Too Early
A lot of people finish dinner, watch the main theatre show and call it a night. And that’s fine, if you want to take it easy. No judgement here.
But some of Ambassador’s late-night entertainment often starts after many passengers have disappeared back to their cabins. Live music, quizzes and smaller performances can create a completely different atmosphere around the ship.
Late evenings often feel more relaxed and less crowded too. The ideal time to just soak it all in and really enjoy that holiday feeling.
The Quiet Corners Packed With Games, Books And Puzzles
Not every cruise moment has to involve organised activities. Sometimes you just want to make your own fun.
Libraries, card rooms and game spaces can be easy to miss entirely, but they’re ideal if you want a quieter afternoon. You might find passengers buried in novels, tackling giant jigsaws or becoming strangely competitive over card games.
Sea days seem to make people unexpectedly enthusiastic about puzzles. I love when there’s a communal jigsaw on the go and everyone contributes a couple of pieces in passing.
Smaller Ships Have Their Own Secret Advantages
People sometimes focus on the giant ships of other cruise lines, packed with attractions, and forget the perks of smaller ships.
You spend less time getting from place to place, faces start becoming familiar and the atmosphere often feels friendlier because you naturally bump into the same people throughout the sailing.
You can also avoid some of the endless walking that comes with enormous floating resorts. That’s one of the real perks of an Ambassador cruise – everything you could want from a ship, but without it being overwhelming.
Chance To Dance – Even If You’ve Got Two Left Feet
Even passengers who swear they can’t dance often end up giving this a try.

Dancing sessions and dance classes are designed to be welcoming rather than intimidating. There’s usually plenty of laughing involved and nobody expects perfection (thankfully).
Some sailings also include choirs and musical activities, so there are lots of ways to join in without feeling like you’re auditioning for a talent show. It’s communal, it’s lighthearted, it’s supportive and it’s fun. So be brave and have a go!
Carpet Bowls Is Weirdly Competitive
Carpet bowls sounds like one of those activities you politely walk past without a second thought.

Then you stop for five minutes, watch people playing and suddenly realise everyone seems extremely invested in winning.
Cruise ships have a talent for turning simple games into surprisingly entertaining events and this one is no different. Just be careful because a quick go can suddenly take over your whole morning…
Theatre@Sea Offers Something Different
Traditional theatre shows aren’t the only performances onboard.

Theatre@Sea can include shorter productions, smaller performances and even murder mystery experiences that pull passengers into the action. These are so much fun!
It changes things up from the usual evening entertainment and can feel a bit more interactive and personal.
You Don’t Need To Wrestle Your Suitcase
This one is one that a lot of people maybe do take advantage of, but they don’t necessarily stop to appreciate it. But they should. After all, nobody enjoys dragging a heavy suitcase through terminals and along endless corridors.
Porterage means your luggage is taken care of, leaving you free to start your holiday without hauling bags around.
It’s one of those perks that’s easy to take for granted because it happens so smoothly, but you’d definitely notice if it wasn’t there.
The Welcome Party And Gala Night You Might Accidentally Miss
On eligible sailings, some passengers can attend welcome cocktail parties and gala dinners but don’t always realise they’re included as part of their booking or loyalty benefits.
These events add a little extra occasion to the cruise experience and can feel like one of those classic cruise moments people imagine when they first book.
Worth checking before you sail – because finding out after the event isn’t quite as fun.

Oh, and if you like those classic touches, I have to mention the Baked Alaska parade – so fun, and a tradition that so many cruise lines have sadly moved on from…
Final Word
It’s easy to fall into a cruise routine. Find your favourite bar on day one, stick with the same spots and suddenly realise you’re packing to go home before you’ve explored half of what’s included.
That’s especially true on Ambassador. Some of the best experiences aren’t the flashy headline attractions – they’re the smaller things hidden in the daily programme or the spaces you casually walk past without a second thought.
So before your next sailing, have a proper look through the schedule, wander into somewhere new and say yes to something you wouldn’t normally try. Worst case, you’ve spent half an hour doing carpet bowls. Best case, you discover the thing you’ll tell people about long after the cruise ends.
