This is a sponsored post for Ambassador Cruise Line.
Let’s be honest: no cruise line is right for everyone.
And that applies to Ambassador Cruise Line, which has plenty of reasons you would want to cruise with them, but also several why you might not.

So, if you’re expecting a party atmosphere, roller coasters and neon lights, here are a few “downsides” you should know about.

Don’t miss the latest Ambassador Cruise Line offers…
1. You Won’t Meet 5,000 People
If your dream cruise involves thousands of fellow passengers and a ship that feels like a floating city, Ambassador isn’t for you.

Their ships carry around 1,400 guests, tops. That’s positively tiny compared to the mega-ships. The upside? No endless queues, fewer crowds, and a calmer atmosphere on board.
2. You Might Make Too Many Friends
With fewer guests, it’s almost impossible not to bump into the same friendly faces again and again.

You’ll probably end up chatting in the lounge, recognising people at dinner, or sitting next to the same couple in the theatre. If you prefer anonymity, there are spaces you can relax, so don’t worry – but if you like making friends, you’ll definitely be in luck.
3. The Spa Isn’t a Secret
Ambassador offers free access to spa facilities like saunas and steam rooms, with only treatments costing extra.

Naturally, this makes the spa a popular spot. If you’re used to a near-empty thermal suite, you may be disappointed. But plan ahead, get there early, and you’ll have every chance to enjoy it without the rush.
4. You Won’t Waste Time Getting Ashore
Because the ships are smaller, they can dock closer to the heart of historic cities and picturesque towns.

That means you step off the gangway and you’re already there – no long shuttle transfers or half-days wasted in traffic. Great if you love more time ashore, but less appealing if you actually enjoy a coach ride.
5. You Won’t Have ‘Too Many’ Dining Options
Some cruise lines offer a dozen paid-for restaurants. Ambassador doesn’t. Instead, the main dining room and buffet are the stars of the show, and speciality dining is limited.

If you live for multiple venues and celebrity-chef menus, you might miss the variety. But for many, the included dining is more than enough – and it’s excellent quality too.
6. You Won’t Get Special Treatment Just For Being Wealthy
There’s no “ship within a ship” concept here. Whether you’ve booked an inside cabin or a suite, you’ll get the same warm welcome and access to the same facilities.

For some, that’s a drawback – no exclusive lounges or private restaurants. But for others, it’s a refreshing change from the tiered class systems found elsewhere.
7. You Can’t Pay Extra for a Better View
All the shows in the main theatre are included in your fare. There are no premium lounges or “better seats” for those willing to pay more.

Some might see that as missing out on VIP treatment. But the reality is simple – every seat has a good view, and the entertainment is available to all.
8. You Can’t Always Sail From Southampton
If you’re set on cruising from Southampton, Ambassador won’t always be your best fit. They sail from seven regional UK ports, including Tilbury, Liverpool and Newcastle.

That’s brilliant if you want a port closer to home. But if you enjoy the buzz (and crowds) of the UK’s busiest cruise hub, you may prefer to stick with the bigger lines.
9. You Won’t Need to Fly
Ambassador, for a long time, has been all about no-fly cruising. Just drive to your departure port and sail away. No airport queues, no baggage reclaim, no jet lag.

For some people, though, the flight is part of the adventure – and if that’s you, you’ll need to wait for Ambassador’s new fly-cruise options to the Caribbean instead.
10. You Won’t Find Theme Park Attractions
Ambassador doesn’t do zip lines, ice rinks or splash parks. The focus is on pools, libraries, craft studios and evening shows.
If you crave adrenaline-fuelled attractions, you’ll need to look elsewhere. But for those who prefer a quieter, more classic cruise experience, it’s a huge plus.
11. Don’t Expect An All-Night Party
It’s not just the lack of crazy features, but also just the vibe – you aren’t going to find a ship filled with neon lights and all-night parties. Ambassador’s pace is calmer, with sociable evenings and quieter sea days.

If you thrive on crowds and constant entertainment, it might feel a little too gentle. But if you’d rather recharge and come home refreshed, you’ll probably love it.
12. …You Might End Up Booking Another. And Another. And…
Nearly one in three guests rebook within two years. That could be addictive. If you like to try a different line every time, Ambassador may spoil those plans.

Once you’ve experienced the smaller ships, personal service and classic style, it’s hard not to return.
Final Word
Ambassador Cruise Line is not for everyone – and that’s exactly the point. If you want water slides, bustling crowds and 24/7 neon parties, you won’t find them here.
But if you love smaller ships, personal service, and a calmer, more classic style of cruising, these so-called “downsides” quickly start to look like very big positives.

Jenni,
Your reasons were spot on, but the title implied negativity. For a lot of people, it should be titled “12 reasons to choose Ambassador”.

I have been with ambassador on several cruises,I find they are brilliant ,they are small and the cost is good.I have just booked to go to the Caribbean, can’t wait and really looking forward to it.
How do Ambassador compare to Marella cruises?
They’re pretty similar in many ways. Main differences are that Marella is all-inclusive (Ambassador gives you the option of a drink package or not) and the Marella are fly-cruises whereas Ambassador usually sail from your local port unless you’re going to the Caribbean.
I think hubby and I would love this!!! The idea of no class segregation is awesome. I feel like when we first cruised, it was more like that, but now, money talks. The downside for us would be, it is a fly cruise. We would have to come over the pond. I sailed out of Liverpool in 1965, it wasn’t called a cruise in those days, lol.
The big downside of the local ports is that whilst it is very easy to set sail from Bristol, hardly any cruises then return there so you get to sail from your local port but have to return from the other end of the country
Ambassador does round trips from Bristol for four months of the year 🙂 There will be a repositioning cruise at the start and end of this period as the ship relocates. I love cruising from Bristol too, it’s so easy for me!
Strange as we’ve specifically been looking out for them but they nearly all the ones we’ve seen start there and end in Liverpool or London
Looks like it’s couples oriented. No images of solos or groups. Similar on c5.
That is another reason bigger ships offer we solos what we need for a happy cruise.
Been on one ambassador cruise solo and booked another in my experience it is as good as many and better than some of the large companies.
Would certainly recommend for singles.
Hi, I sailed solo to Iceland on Ambition in June. I was on a table with 7 other Solo travellers and we all had a great time. I loved the smaller ship vibe, kept bumping into the same people and never felt lonely. Ambassador also arranged a solo lunch one day which was great. I would highly recommend Ambassador for the solo traveller.
