Norwegian Cruise Line has confirmed that extensive upgrades to its private island, Great Stirrup Cay, will be fully operational by the end of 2026, as the line prepares guests booked on 2027 sailings for an enhanced experience.

The cruise line has invested at least $150 million into the Bahamian destination, with a wide range of new सुविधities and infrastructure designed to improve both access and time spent on the island. In a communication sent to future guests, the company said the upcoming visits will coincide with a “new chapter” for the destination as development work continues.
“As we continue to refine and expand Great Stirrup Cay, our focus remains on ensuring every guest can fully enjoy all that the island has to offer…Your upcoming visit coincides with an exciting new chapter for our private island,” the cruise line said.
Among the most anticipated additions is the Great Tides Waterpark, set to feature 19 slides, alongside a new two-ship pier that will eliminate the need for tender operations once completed.

Enhanced Experiences Across The Island
The development project also includes several amenities that have either recently opened or are nearing completion.
These include upgraded dining and bar venues, the Great Life Lagoon, a 1.4-acre pool area, and the Vibe Shore Club, an adults-only retreat offering premium seating and dedicated service.

The enhancements are expected to support a growing number of ship visits. A total of 15 vessels are scheduled to call at Great Stirrup Cay in both 2026 and 2027, including newer ships such as Norwegian Aqua, due in 2025, and Norwegian Luna, which is expected to join the fleet in 2026.
Beverage Package Decision Reversed
Norwegian Cruise Line has also used its latest guest communication to confirm that its Free at Sea beverage package will continue to be honoured on the island, following previous plans to remove the perk.
The decision to end drink package usage ashore had sparked significant backlash when it was announced, prompting the cruise line to reconsider. By March 2026, travel advisors had already been informed that the change was being paused indefinitely.
That position has now been reinforced for guests sailing in 2027.
“After receiving feedback from our guests and travel partners, guests with the Free at Sea or More at Sea beverage packages will continue to enjoy the same beverage package inclusions as they do on board. This means your beverage experience flows effortlessly from ship-to-shore,” the company confirmed.
Guests are still encouraged to purchase beverage packages before sailing, as onboard pricing is typically higher. Packages can be modified up to 24 hours before embarkation and may also be purchased during the first two days of a cruise.
Pier Completion Timeline And Temporary Disruption
A key component of the island’s transformation is the long-awaited permanent pier, which began construction in early 2025. Once finished, it will allow two ships to dock simultaneously, significantly improving accessibility and reducing the risk of missed calls due to weather.
“Our new two-ship pier, a significant enhancement designed to elevate arrival and improve access, will be in place for your visit, offering a smoother transition from ship-to-shore,” the cruise line said.
In the short term, however, guests may experience some disruption. While a temporary pier is currently in use, operations will revert to tendering from 1st April as construction progresses on the permanent structure. This phase is expected to last through to July or August before docking capability is fully restored.
Once complete, the new pier is expected to be one of the most impactful upgrades at Great Stirrup Cay, particularly for guests visiting during the busy 2027 season.
