Netflix is set to revisit one of the cruise industry’s most devastating disasters with the release of a new documentary examining the sinking of Costa Concordia.

Shipwrecked: Nightmare At Sea will premiere on 10th July and explores the events surrounding the 2012 tragedy through survivor accounts and previously unseen footage.
Netflix describes the documentary by saying: “Never-before-seen footage and survivor accounts trace the 2012 shipwreck of a luxury cruise and the disaster that ensued, in this immersive documentary.”
The release follows a growing number of cruise-related documentaries added to the streaming platform in recent years, covering everything from maritime disasters to high-profile disappearances at sea.
A trailer for the show can be watched on Netflix now.
Revisiting The Costa Concordia Disaster
Costa Concordia ran aground off the Italian island of Giglio on 13th January 2012 after striking submerged rocks during what became an unauthorised close approach to the island.

The impact tore a large hole in the ship’s hull, causing it to take on water before eventually capsizing close to shore.
While many passengers and crew were rescued, 32 people lost their lives in one of the deadliest cruise ship disasters in modern history.
The accident sparked worldwide headlines, not only because of the scale of the tragedy but also due to the actions of Captain Francesco Schettino, who was heavily criticised for leaving the vessel before the evacuation had been completed. He was later convicted of multiple offences, including manslaughter.

The disaster prompted significant changes across the cruise industry, with cruise lines introducing stricter emergency procedures, enhanced bridge management protocols and mandatory passenger muster drills before departure.
The sinking of Costa Concordia became one of the most extensively investigated maritime disasters in recent history. Italian authorities concluded that the ship had deviated from its planned route in order to perform a close sail-past, known in the industry as a “salute”, bringing the vessel unusually close to the shore of Giglio.
Following the disaster, cruise operators around the world reviewed their own operating procedures. The industry introduced a number of measures designed to improve safety, including stricter voyage planning, enhanced bridge resource management and improved emergency response protocols.
One of the most noticeable changes for passengers was the introduction of mandatory muster drills before a ship leaves port.
Prior to the Costa Concordia accident, some cruise lines allowed safety briefings to take place after departure. Today’s procedures ensure guests are familiar with evacuation routes and emergency instructions before the vessel begins its voyage.
The disaster also had a lasting impact on public perceptions of cruising. While the industry has continued to grow over the past decade, Costa Concordia remains one of the defining events in modern cruise history and is frequently referenced whenever discussions turn to maritime safety and emergency preparedness.
Netflix Continues Cruise Documentary Collection
Shipwrecked: Nightmare At Sea is the latest in a growing collection of Netflix documentaries centred on cruise ships and the stories behind some of their most infamous incidents.
In 2025, Trainwreck: The Poop Cruise examined the widely publicised 2013 Carnival Triumph incident, when an engine room fire left the ship without propulsion, causing widespread sanitation failures as thousands of passengers remained stranded in the Gulf of Mexico for several days.

The streaming service also released Amy Bradley Is Missing in July 2025. The three-part documentary revisits the disappearance of 23-year-old Amy Lynn Bradley, who vanished from Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas during a Caribbean cruise in March 1998.
Despite decades of investigations and reported sightings, the case remains unsolved.
While each documentary focuses on a very different event, they reflect the continued public fascination with some of the cruise industry’s most significant and enduring stories, years after the incidents themselves took place.
