MSC Cruises has completed the installation of a spectacular 39-foot illuminated dragon sculpture aboard MSC World Asia, just months ahead of the ship’s debut in December 2026.
The impressive stainless steel artwork, adorned with 680 mirrors and more than 3,000 LED lights, now sits prominently above the World Promenade, serving as the centrepiece of the vessel’s Asian-inspired design philosophy.
The cruise line documented the complex installation process in a video shared across its social media channels, showcasing the precision required to bring this architectural marvel aboard.
Massive cranes carefully lifted individual sections of the dragon sculpture over the 215,863 gross-ton vessel before lowering them onto the ship piece by piece.
Once aboard, skilled crews meticulously assembled the components before hoisting the completed sculpture into its permanent position above the World Promenade.
The installation represents a significant milestone in the ship’s construction timeline, marking one of the final major artistic additions before MSC World Asia enters service.

The Tree of Life serves multiple functional purposes beyond its aesthetic appeal. Positioned as the focal point of The Harbour, the tree marks the entry point to the Spiral, an extraordinary 266-foot dry slide that winds across 12 decks of the ship.
This record-breaking slide connects The Harbour on the upper decks to the World Promenade below, offering passengers an exhilarating journey through the heart of the vessel. The combination of the dragon and Tree of Life creates complementary artistic anchors that define different areas of the ship.

Construction Timeline And Technical Milestones
Construction on MSC World Asia commenced in April 2024 with a traditional steel-cutting ceremony at the renowned Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. This milestone occurred just two days after MSC World America achieved her float-out at the same facility, demonstrating the shipyard’s capacity to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
The ship reached her own float-out milestone in November 2025, when she was moved from the construction hall to the outfitting dock. This critical phase allowed crews to access the vessel from water level, accelerating the installation of technical systems and interior furnishings.
Initial sea trials took place in July 2026, testing propulsion systems, navigation equipment, and safety systems under real-world conditions. These trials typically last several days and occur in stages, with engineers methodically evaluating every system before certifying the vessel as seaworthy.
The dragon installation in recent weeks represents one of the final major artistic additions before delivery. Interior finishing work continues as the ship approaches her scheduled handover to MSC Cruises ahead of the December 2026 debut.
Inaugural Mediterranean Season Before Asian Deployment
Despite the comprehensive Asian theming throughout the vessel, MSC World Asia will launch with a distinctly European inaugural programme. Her maiden voyage is scheduled for 4th December 2026, departing Barcelona on a seven-night Mediterranean itinerary.

The World-class series expansion continues beyond MSC World Asia. MSC World Atlantic is currently under construction at Chantiers de l’Atlantique with a planned 2027 debut.
MSC Cruises has also ordered two additional World-class vessels from the French shipyard, scheduled to enter service in 2030 and 2031 respectively, bringing the total World-class fleet to seven ships by the early 2030s.
