A tropical depression forming in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico is poised to disrupt cruise operations along the US Gulf Coast this week. Vessels sailing from New Orleans and Galveston potentially face schedule changes as the system strengthens and tracks westward.
The National Hurricane Center issued its first advisory on Tropical Depression Two on Sunday, 19th July 2026. This marks the second official tropical system of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.
As of 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, meteorologists located the storm’s centre approximately 155 miles west of Port Tampa Bay. The system is crawling north-northwest at a sluggish one mile per hour.
This exceptionally slow forward movement creates ideal conditions for the depression to organise and intensify over the warm Gulf waters. Forecasters anticipate the system will achieve tropical storm status by late Sunday night or early Monday morning.
At that point, it will be designated Tropical Storm Bertha – the second named storm of what experts predict will be an active hurricane season.
Storm Characteristics and Strengthening Forecast
The developing tropical system currently exhibits maximum sustained winds of 30 miles per hour, with higher gusts recorded across its expansive circulation. According to the National Hurricane Center’s technical analysis, several atmospheric factors are influencing the depression’s development rate.
“The sprawling nature of the system, nearby dry air, and some northeasterly vertical wind shear suggest that any strengthening should be slow to occur, especially in the short term,” the NHC explained in its advisory.
“Nonetheless, the system is expected to become a tropical storm as it approaches the Florida Panhandle during the next day or two.”
Meteorologists note that conditions may become more favorable for intensification once the system completes its anticipated turn towards the west. The ultimate strength of what will become Bertha depends largely on how far offshore the circulation remains as it tracks along the northern Gulf Coast. Current forecast models suggest the storm will make its closest approach to Louisiana’s largest city late Wednesday evening, 22nd July. There are no cruise vessels scheduled for port operations at that time.
Carnival Valor is the primary vessel of concern for New Orleans passengers this week. The ship is scheduled to depart on Monday, 20th July for a five-night Western Caribbean voyage calling at Cozumel and Progreso.
The early-week timing of this departure works in passengers’ favour, as the storm will still be positioned well to the east. It is unlikely to generate significant weather impacts in the New Orleans area.
However, Carnival Cruise Line may opt to adjust the ship’s departure time or make minor routing changes. This would ensure Carnival Valor steers well clear of the system’s outer bands.

Galveston Operations Face Greater Uncertainty
Texas cruise passengers face considerably more uncertainty as the tropical system is forecast to track westward across the Gulf towards the Galveston area later in the week. Current projections place the storm near Galveston on Friday, 24th July.
Conditions could potentially linger into the weekend depending on forward speed.
Carnival Breeze, scheduled to depart Galveston on Thursday, 23rd July, occupies a precarious position in the schedule. The ship may be able to sail before conditions deteriorate significantly in port, but cruise line meteorologists will need to carefully evaluate the situation.
They must determine whether the vessel can safely navigate out of the area and away from the storm’s projected path without encountering rough seas or dangerous winds.
The cruise line may opt to delay Breeze’s departure, expedite it to beat the approaching weather, or potentially keep the ship in port until conditions improve. Such decisions balance passenger safety with operational efficiency.
Delayed departures compress port times at planned destinations or may require itinerary modifications to make up lost time.
Weekend Sailings Hang in the Balance
Saturday, 25th July represents the most operationally complex day for Galveston cruise operations. Three large vessels are scheduled for port activities: Carnival Jubilee, Carnival Dream, and Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas.
All three are slated to be in port, representing thousands of passengers and crew members whose travel plans could be disrupted.
Carnival Jubilee is scheduled to embark passengers for a week-long Western Caribbean cruise. This cruise features calls at Cozumel, Costa Maya, and Roatan.
As one of Carnival’s newest and largest vessels, the 5,200-passenger ship represents a significant operational commitment. Any delays ripple through subsequent weekly sailings.
Mariner of the Seas plans to depart on a five-night Western Caribbean itinerary. This itinerary calls at Costa Maya and Cozumel.
The Royal Caribbean vessel can accommodate approximately 3,800 guests, many of whom may already be travelling to Galveston when final decisions about the sailing are made.
Port Infrastructure Concerns Add Complexity
Beyond immediate weather impacts on ship movements, cruise line executives must also consider potential damage to port infrastructure. This could hamper operations even after the storm passes.
The Port of Galveston’s cruise terminals have been substantially upgraded in recent years. However, tropical systems can still cause flooding, power outages, or damage to gangways and other boarding equipment.
