Villa Vie Residences has confirmed that its residential cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey has suspended operations in Cambodia, with soaring fuel costs forcing the company to consider restructuring its business.
In a statement issued on 27th October 2026, the company said the cost of operating the vessel had become unsustainable, with monthly fuel expenses rising dramatically during its time in Asia.
The announcement follows reports that residents were instructed to leave the ship in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, with an internal message reportedly giving them just hours to disembark.
Villa Vie Residences has confirmed that it is working with residents to coordinate their departure and identify temporary accommodation.
The company is now exploring restructuring and new financing arrangements over the next 60 days, although it has warned that there is no guarantee of a successful outcome.
The suspension leaves residents facing uncertainty over their homes and financial commitments, while passengers booked on upcoming voyages are also questioning whether their trips will go ahead.
Residents Given Hours To Leave Their Floating Home
The reported instruction to disembark was shared by Randy Cassingham, who has been living aboard Villa Vie Odyssey with his wife, Kit, and documenting their experiences.
In an article published on 26th October, Cassingham reproduced what he described as an internal company announcement posted at 7.08am ship time.
The message, attributed to CEO Kathy Villalba, stated:
Unfortunately, we were unable to secure the fuel necessary to continue operations. As a result, the Odyssey will enter a temporary layup this afternoon, with crew remaining onboard to maintain the vessel and its essential systems.
The announcement then instructed residents:
All residents must disembark by 2:00 PM today.
Those unable to remove all their belongings immediately were reportedly told to make arrangements with Guest Services to return to the vessel.
According to the message, shuttle services would remain available until 6pm the following day to assist residents in retrieving their possessions.
In its subsequent public statement, Villa Vie Residences acknowledged the disruption facing those aboard.
The company said it was working with residents to organise their departure and identify temporary living arrangements, while also considering the impact on crew members and employees.
However, the statement did not explain how long residents might need to remain ashore or provide details of any financial assistance available to those affected.
The short notice presents particular difficulties for passengers who have been living aboard full-time, some of whom have sold their homes or made substantial financial commitments to the residential cruising programme.
Cassingham described the announcement as the apparent end of the journey, at least for the immediate future.
He also suggested that the interruption had followed a series of mounting difficulties rather than a single unexpected problem, citing concerns over the business model, management decisions and fuel costs.
His wife, Kit, reportedly described the ship as having abandoned its residents in Cambodia, while acknowledging that the suspension might not necessarily be permanent.
Another resident shared a public Facebook post stating that the remaining passengers had been required to leave the ship.
The precise number of residents affected by the latest disembarkation order has not been confirmed.
Fuel Problems Raise Questions About Ship’s Future
Villa Vie Residences has attributed the suspension to a dramatic increase in fuel costs, which it says has made its current operating model financially unsustainable.
According to the company, monthly fuel expenses that previously averaged approximately $1,800 per cabin have recently climbed to an estimated $6,000 to $8,000 per cabin in parts of Asia.
The figures represent an increase of more than three to four times the previous cost, placing significant pressure on the company’s finances.
Villa Vie Residences said it could not realistically pass such substantial increases on to residents, leaving the business unable to absorb the resulting operating losses.
In its statement, the company explained that it had already attempted to reduce consumption by slowing the ship’s itinerary and spending longer periods in port.
Those measures had proved insufficient, with management acknowledging that it could no longer continue covering the financial shortfall.
The company linked the rising costs to a conflict that began in late February, although its statement did not identify the conflict.
Before the suspension was officially confirmed, discussions within an unofficial Facebook group had suggested that approximately $360,000 was needed to secure fuel and allow the ship to continue operating.
Some members claimed residents had been asked to contribute additional money urgently, with the possibility of disembarkation if sufficient funds could not be raised.
However, Villa Vie Residences has not publicly confirmed the alleged $360,000 figure or explained whether the reported funding request formed part of its efforts to obtain fuel.
The company’s statement also did not clarify whether the immediate problem involved an inability to purchase fuel, outstanding supplier payments or other financial or logistical difficulties.

Further unverified claims circulating online have raised questions about outstanding crew wages and the company’s wider finances. No supporting official documentation has been established for those allegations.
The uncertainty is also affecting people who have booked future voyages aboard Villa Vie Odyssey, with some facing the prospect of losing thousands of dollars if their trips cannot go ahead.
One prospective passenger said she had booked directly with Villa Vie Residences for a sailing scheduled from 10th November to 31st December 2026.
They said they’d paid $9,000 per person for the trip and were now concerned about recovering the money.
“I want my money back. I can’t afford to lose it,”
Another prospective passenger said she had rented accommodation directly from Villa Vie for the ship’s upcoming Segment 12 voyage and was waiting to see whether the vessel would reach Singapore by 10th November as planned.
Neither booking account has been independently verified, and it is not yet known what arrangements Villa Vie Residences may offer customers whose upcoming voyages are affected.
The accounts nevertheless suggest that the consequences of the disruption could extend beyond those currently living aboard the ship.
Some people involved with the residential cruising programme have alleged that the company has been asking for additional payments to keep the vessel operating.
One Facebook commenter claimed that residents had faced substantial financial demands in recent months to cover expenses including fuel, crew wages and provisions. The same individual claimed to have invested almost $250,000 in the residential cruising programme.
These claims have not been independently substantiated.
For existing residents, the most immediate concern is what happens to their accommodation and financial commitments while the ship remains out of service.
Villa Vie Residences offers an alternative to conventional cruising, allowing customers to purchase or rent accommodation aboard a vessel intended to travel continuously between destinations.
Some residents have invested significant sums in securing long-term accommodation, while others pay ongoing fees associated with living aboard.
The reported decision to suspend operations therefore has consequences beyond a typical cancelled cruise, potentially affecting people’s homes, possessions and long-term travel arrangements.
It remains unclear whether residents and future passengers will receive alternative arrangements, financial assistance or refunds during the interruption.
The company has reportedly described the lay-up as temporary, but no timetable has been established for returning passengers to the ship or resuming scheduled voyages.
Company Faces 60-Day Restructuring Effort
Villa Vie Residences has confirmed that it is exploring restructuring and recapitalisation options in an attempt to address the financial difficulties.
The company said it would focus on supporting residents, crew members and employees while pursuing potential solutions over the next 60 days.
However, it acknowledged that the process remains uncertain and that no outcome is guaranteed.
No financing agreement or transaction has been finalised, meaning there is currently no confirmed funding arrangement that would allow Villa Vie Odyssey to resume its voyage.
The announcement raises significant questions about the long-term future of the residential cruising programme and the financial commitments made by those living aboard.
Although the company has not announced a permanent closure, the suspension will remain in place while it evaluates its options.
The 60-day period represents a target for the company’s restructuring and financing efforts, rather than a confirmed date for Villa Vie Odyssey to return to service.
Villa Vie Residences said further announcements would be made when significant developments occur.
Latest Setback For A Cruise That Began With Major Delays
Villa Vie Odyssey’s difficulties date back to before its inaugural departure.
The ship, formerly known as Braemar under Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, was acquired by Villa Vie Residences in 2023 and prepared for a new role as a residential cruise vessel.
Its original departure from Belfast was scheduled for 30th May 2024, with residents expecting to begin an ambitious multi-year voyage around the world.
However, technical issues and certification delays prevented the ship from leaving as planned.
Passengers spent approximately four months waiting in Northern Ireland while repairs and inspections continued.
The vessel initially left Belfast Harbour on 30th September 2024 but remained in nearby waters before finally departing Belfast Lough on 3rd October.
The delayed departure attracted international attention, particularly because some prospective residents had already sold their homes or made arrangements to live permanently aboard.
Once the voyage began, the ship travelled through Europe, the Americas, the Pacific and Asia as part of its residential cruising programme.
More recently, however, accounts from passengers have described repeated itinerary alterations and concerns about the standard of onboard services.
One former passenger detailed a series of disruptions during her time aboard, including unexpected port changes, extended stays and difficulties with dining, laundry and internet services.
She explained that she and her travelling companions eventually left the vessel earlier than intended after further itinerary changes interfered with their onward travel plans.
Her account also described additional accommodation and dining costs incurred while staying ashore.
These experiences reflect individual passenger reports rather than independently verified findings about the ship’s overall operations.
The suspension represents the most serious setback yet for a residential cruising programme that has faced repeated difficulties since its delayed launch in 2024.
For those who invested in the concept, Villa Vie Odyssey was intended to provide a permanent home while travelling between destinations around the world.
Instead, residents now face an uncertain period ashore, with no confirmed date for returning to their floating home.
While Villa Vie Residences insists it is working towards a financial solution, the company has acknowledged that no outcome is assured.
Whether the ship can resume its global voyage will now depend on the success of its restructuring and financing efforts over the coming weeks.
