Two passengers aboard Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Spirit are facing federal assault charges after a dispute over a priority Guest Services queue allegedly turned physical during a Bahamas cruise earlier this year.
The incident took place in March 2026 aboard the 85,920-gross-ton ship while it was sailing from Mobile, Alabama, according to reports first published by Fox 10 News. The altercation happened near the end of the voyage as guests queued at the Guest Services desk on Deck 2.

Authorities say Tonya Nelson confronted fellow passenger Lisa Horace after noticing Horace was standing in a line reserved for Diamond and Platinum members of Carnival Cruise Line’s VIFP loyalty programme.
FBI interview summaries reportedly state that Nelson repeatedly attempted to alert Horace to the dedicated queue by tapping her husband on the shoulder. The situation escalated after Horace allegedly threatened to slap Nelson.
Investigators have not confirmed who struck first, but both women allegedly exchanged slaps before the confrontation escalated into kicking and other physical aggression. The pair were previously unknown to one another before the incident.
No serious injuries have been reported.
Because the incident occurred in international waters, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has jurisdiction over the case. Both women have now been charged with simple assault and were ordered to appear in federal court in Mobile on Wednesday, 13th May 2026.
Carnival Cruise Line has not publicly commented on the matter, though investigators confirmed surveillance footage from the ship was reviewed as part of the case.
Priority Guest Services Lines Can Cause Frustration
The incident has once again highlighted how strongly some cruise passengers value loyalty programme perks, particularly when ships become crowded near the end of a sailing.
Dedicated Guest Services queues for Diamond and Platinum VIFP members are considered one of Carnival’s most valued loyalty benefits, allowing repeat guests to avoid lengthy waits at one of the busiest areas onboard.
However, it remains unclear whether Horace was actually in the wrong queue.
Passengers who purchase Carnival Cruise Line’s Faster to the Fun package are also permitted to use the priority Guest Services line regardless of their loyalty status. If Horace had purchased the add-on package, she would have been entitled to access the queue.
Long lines at Guest Services are especially common during the final days of a cruise as passengers review onboard spending, resolve billing concerns, ask questions about disembarkation, or settle issues linked to Sail & Sign accounts.

With Carnival Spirit carrying up to 2,124 guests at double occupancy, even a relatively small number of passengers seeking assistance can quickly create lengthy queues.
Carnival has also reduced or removed dedicated priority lines on some sailings in recent years when unusually high numbers of Diamond and Platinum guests are onboard, meaning the perk is not always guaranteed.
Carnival Continues Efforts To Reduce Onboard Fights
The cruise line has faced a series of highly publicised onboard altercations in recent years, prompting increased efforts to crack down on disruptive behaviour.
Carnival Cruise Line has strengthened security presence on some sailings, issued reminders about its guest code of conduct, and warned passengers that fighting or violent behaviour can lead to removal from a ship, lifetime bans, and possible criminal prosecution.
Several recent incidents across the wider cruise industry have also drawn attention online, including fights during embarkation and disembarkation, pool deck altercations, and disputes in dining venues and public areas.
While arguments over queues and crowded spaces are not uncommon during busy sailings, incidents escalating into criminal charges remain relatively rare.
