Large crowds of guests refused to disembark a Costa cruise ship, after having their itinerary disrupted and shortened by a typhoon.
The Costa Serena, sailing out of Taiwan, departed on a 5-night cruise from Keelung Port on Sunday 21st July. The itinerary was supposed to include visits to Ishigaki and Naha on the Okinawa island of Japan.
The day before the cruise started, the cruise line announced that Typhoon Gaemi would impact the itinerary, and that Ishigaki could no longer be visited. Instead, Naha would be brought forward and then the cruise would call at Miyako Island.
However, once the cruise got underway, that became impossible. The Miyako Island port call was cancelled without a replacement destination, and the stay at Naha was drastically shortened. At this stage, guests were offered a $100 credit.
But then as the typhoon got stronger, the ship cut short the cruise, returning to Taiwan on 24th July. But not only did the cruise end early, it docked at a different port – Kaohsiung, on the opposite side of Taiwan and 232 miles from Keelung.
The charter company running the cruises did arrange rail travel for guests, and offered compensation for travel expenses, but guests weren’t happy with the offer.
Instead of leaving the ship, many gathered in public areas, chanting things such as “Refund the money” in protest.
Authorities convinced passengers to leave the ship to return home safely, and then continue their dispute with the charter company and cruise line later.
