A cruise ship proposal that did not go to plan has captured millions of views online, after a Texas couple shared their memorable engagement story nearly nine years later.
The now-married pair became engaged aboard Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Breeze in October 2017, but a timing mix-up by the ship’s dining crew meant celebrations began before the proposal had even happened.

The incident recently resurfaced after Amanda posted a video of the moment on TikTok, where it has since attracted more than 2.1 million views and thousands of comments.
The couple had been sailing from Galveston on what was intended to be a family holiday aboard the Dream Class vessel, which can accommodate up to 3,690 guests.
Proposal Plans Go Awry At Sea
Gary Bratton III had carefully arranged the proposal in advance, purchasing an engagement ring from the ship’s onboard Effy jewellery store and coordinating with dining staff to deliver it at the start of dinner service.
The plan was simple. The ring would arrive at the table, prompting Gary to ask Amanda the question.
Instead, the execution went off-script.

At the end of the meal, the serving team approached the table with a dessert, complete with a candle, while singing a celebratory “Happy Engagement to You”. The problem was that Gary had not yet proposed.
The video shows Gary appearing caught off guard, while Amanda looks confused as the premature celebration unfolds.
Thinking quickly, Gary adapted to the situation. As the crew continued singing, he got down on one knee and proceeded with the proposal, receiving a “yes” moments later as fellow diners applauded.
Amanda later reflected on the experience in her TikTok caption, writing: “That time Carnival celebrated our engagement before he proposed! Ah, good times! Best story all these years later!”
Mixed Reactions From Viewers
The viral clip has prompted a wide range of reactions from viewers, with opinions divided over whether the moment was spoiled or made more memorable by the mishap.
Some commenters expressed frustration on Gary’s behalf, suggesting the proposal had likely been planned very differently.
Others, however, praised his reaction, noting that his ability to stay calm and embrace the unexpected moment added to its charm.
One viewer commented that while Gary initially appeared upset, his quick thinking made the proposal “perfect in its own special way”.
Several also described his response as a positive sign for handling challenges in a relationship, highlighting adaptability as an important quality in marriage.
Amanda has clarified that she shared the video simply to revisit a funny and meaningful memory, rather than to criticise the cruise line or seek any response.
Carnival Cruise Line has not publicly commented on the viral moment, though the story has resonated with many cruise fans who recall their own onboard celebrations and milestone events.
