This is a sponsored post for Ambassador Cruise Line.
Whenever somebody tells me they don’t like cruises, I always wonder whether they just haven’t found the right cruise line yet.

After all, there’s a huge difference between sailing on a mega-ship packed with attractions and enjoying a more traditional cruise on a smaller ship. What one person loves, another might hate.
And that’s certainly true of Ambassador Cruise Line. Its smaller ships, friendly atmosphere and relaxed approach to cruising appeal to plenty of people, but they’re not for everyone…
1. Parents Who Want A Holiday Packed With Kids’ Activities
If you’re looking for a cruise where the children can spend their days racing down water slides, meeting cartoon characters and making friends in enormous kids’ clubs, Ambassador isn’t for you.

While Ambassador has historically offered a limited number of dedicated multigenerational sailings where children were welcome, it now operates as a fully adults only cruise line, so families hoping to cruise with several generations will need to look elsewhere.
However, those multigenerational cruises are being phased out, and from March 2027 Ambassador will become a fully adults-only cruise line. That means there won’t be any sailings where younger children can come along, so families hoping to cruise with several generations will need to look elsewhere.
But for adults who actively seek out a child-free holiday, it’s fantastic news!
There’s something lovely about relaxing by the pool, enjoying a quiet drink or settling down with a book without the noise and excitement of hundreds of children enjoying their holidays around you.
And with Ambassador, that more grown-up atmosphere is part of the experience, rather than something you have to pay extra to enjoy.

2. People Who Expect Exclusive VIP Treatment
Some of the world’s biggest cruise ships now have entire areas that are reserved exclusively for passengers staying in their most expensive suites.
These might include private restaurants, special lounges, dedicated swimming pools and even separate sun decks.

For some cruisers, that exclusivity is a huge part of the appeal. They enjoy having access to facilities that other passengers can’t use and are happy to pay for that privilege.
Ambassador takes a rather different approach.
There are different cabin categories, of course, and guests can choose to pay for additional comforts and experiences. But you won’t find the same extensive ship-within-a-ship concept that has become popular on some larger cruise lines.
Instead, the focus is on making every guest feel welcome and valued.
And that certainly doesn’t mean you’re missing out on excellent service. Quite the opposite.
One of the things that makes traditional cruising so appealing is the personal attention from the crew. Whether you’re enjoying a meal, ordering a drink or simply asking for some advice, good service can make an enormous difference to your holiday.
Your choice to stay in a deluxe suite or interior cabin doesn’t make you more or less deserving of a smile, a friendly conversation or somebody remembering how you like your morning coffee.
If you value that kind of personal service over having access to an exclusive VIP area, you might find Ambassador suits you very well indeed.
3. Cruisers Who Prefer To Remain Completely Anonymous
One thing I’ve noticed about very large cruise ships is how easy it can be to spend an entire week surrounded by thousands of people without getting to know many of them.

You might sit beside somebody at breakfast and never see them again for the rest of your holiday. And for some people, that’s exactly what they want.
But Ambassador’s ships have capacities that range from 1,100 to 1,400 guests, which is significantly smaller than the huge resort-style ships, meaning you’ll often start recognising familiar faces as your cruise progresses.
You might get chatting to somebody during an activity, see them again in the theatre that evening and then find yourself sharing stories over a drink the following day.
It’s the sort of environment where friendships can develop quite naturally, without anybody having to make a special effort. This plays a large part in Ambassador’s cruises being so well suited to solo travellers, as it’s easy to connect with friendly faces throughout the sailing.
Of course, you don’t have to be sociable all the time. There are plenty of opportunities to find somewhere peaceful and enjoy your own company.
4. People Who Want The Party To Last Until Sunrise
There’s nothing wrong with wanting a lively cruise holiday. Some people love ships with bustling nightclubs, loud music and parties that carry on until the early hours.
If that’s what you’re hoping for, Ambassador might not be your first choice, although that doesn’t mean the ships are boring once the sun goes down. Far from it.
There are theatre shows, live music, bars and plenty of opportunities to enjoy an evening with friends. Ambassador also offers themed cruises, which can bring a very different atmosphere to certain sailings.
But on a typical cruise, evenings tend to follow a more traditional pace. You might get dressed for dinner, watch a show, enjoy a drink with some live music and then decide whether to stay out a little longer or head back to your cabin.
It’s entertainment without feeling that you have to keep going until three in the morning to get your money’s worth.
For cruisers who want a big party every night, that might sound a little too relaxed, but if you like being entertained in the evening and still waking up feeling refreshed for the next day’s adventures, it’s a rather nice balance.
5. Travellers Who Only Want To Visit The Famous Ports
There’s a reason why destinations such as Barcelona, Rome and Naples feature on so many cruise itineraries. They’re obviously some fantastic places to visit, and there’s always plenty to see.

Ambassador offers plenty of familiar destinations, but it also has cruises that take passengers to some less obvious places.
Its itineraries include destinations across Northern Europe, the Norwegian fjords, Iceland, the British Isles and beyond, with opportunities to explore ports that don’t always appear on the routes of the biggest ships.
And the smaller size of Ambassador’s ships can be a real advantage when visiting certain destinations, particularly where larger vessels face restrictions.
Personally, I think there’s a lot to be said for looking beyond the most famous ports. Sometimes it’s the places you’ve barely heard of before booking that become the highlights of a holiday.
A smaller coastal town, an unexpected view or somewhere you wouldn’t have thought to visit independently can make a cruise feel like a proper adventure.
6. Cruisers Who Insist On Sailing From Southampton
Southampton is the UK’s biggest cruise port, and it’s the obvious starting point for many British cruisers. There’s a huge range of ships sailing from there, and if you live nearby, it’s understandably convenient.
For people in other parts of the UK, getting to Southampton can mean a lengthy drive, an overnight hotel stay or the cost of travelling by train.
Ambassador doesn’t sail from Southampton, and has made regional departures an important part of its offering, with cruises sailing from Liverpool, Newcastle, Dundee, Belfast, Bristol, Portsmouth and London Tilbury, depending on the ship, itinerary and season. Ambassador also offers a regional coach transfer service on selected sailings from Tilbury, running return journeys from major towns and cities across the UK to the London International Cruise Terminal, making these departures more accessible for other regions of the country.
That opens up opportunities for people who might otherwise have a very long journey just to reach their ship.
And because Ambassador offers a wide range of no-fly cruises, you can often avoid the airport experience altogether.
Imagine being able to set off from somewhere relatively close to home, board your ship and begin your holiday without worrying about flight delays or luggage restrictions.
Of course, if you live five minutes from Southampton, you might assume Ambassador isn’t an obvious choice, but various Ambassador cruises depart from Portsmouth each season, just a short drive down the M27.
For plenty of British cruisers, having multiple regional ports to choose from is a huge benefit.
7. People Who Think The Ship Should Be The Entire Holiday
I think this is probably the biggest difference between Ambassador and some of the more modern cruise lines.
There are cruise ships where the vessel itself is the main attraction. People book them because they want to try the latest rides, explore enormous entertainment complexes and experience facilities that you simply won’t find on land-based holidays.

The ports are almost an added bonus.
Ambassador offers something a little different. Of course, the ships are an important part of the experience. There are comfortable places to relax, restaurants to enjoy, entertainment in the evenings and activities throughout the day.
You certainly don’t have to spend your sea days sitting around doing nothing. The real appeal, though, is more about the overall cruise experience, including the journey, the people you meet and the places you visit.
You might spend a morning admiring the scenery as your ship sails into a Norwegian fjord, enjoy a leisurely afternoon on deck or discover a destination you might never otherwise have considered.
And when you return to the ship, you have somewhere welcoming and familiar to relax before the next adventure.
I think that’s an important distinction because it’s easy to get caught up comparing cruise ships based on how many restaurants, swimming pools or attractions they offer.
But having the longest list of facilities doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have the best holiday.
Sometimes it’s the atmosphere, the service and the destinations that make a cruise memorable.
Final Word
So, is Ambassador the wrong cruise line for you?
If you’re looking for a family holiday with water slides, an enormous ship filled with attractions or a nightclub that stays busy until sunrise, it might be. And that’s absolutely fine. There are lots of fantastic cruise lines offering those experiences.
But if you’re drawn to smaller ships, friendly service, interesting itineraries and a more relaxed style of holiday, Ambassador could be a brilliant choice.
With regional UK departures, adults only cruising and the warmest welcome at sea, it offers an experience that can be harder to find among the biggest cruise operators.
You don’t have to be the sort of person who enjoys every cruise line. You just have to find the one that suits you. That might be Ambassador.
