Celebrity Cruises has cancelled a scheduled August 2027 sailing aboard Celebrity Equinox, notifying booked passengers that the departure will no longer operate due to a full-ship charter commitment.

The cruise line sent formal notifications to affected guests in recent days, confirming that the 12 August 2027 voyage has been pulled from the schedule. The decision impacts passengers who had booked what was planned as a nine-night Mediterranean itinerary exploring Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
Celebrity acknowledged the disruption in its statement to guests, recognising the inconvenience caused by the late-stage cancellation. The company has outlined several compensation packages and alternative sailing options for those whose holiday plans have been affected by the charter arrangement.
Original Itinerary Featured Overnight Lisbon Call And Moroccan Port
The cancelled sailing was set to depart Barcelona on a roundtrip voyage spanning nine nights across the Western Mediterranean and North African coast. The itinerary included calls at Porto in Portugal, the Moroccan port of Tangier, and Cádiz in southern Spain.
A highlight of the planned cruise was an overnight stay in Lisbon, allowing passengers extended time to explore Portugal’s historic capital. The combination of Iberian and North African ports represented one of Celebrity’s popular summer Mediterranean programmes.
The Celebrity Equinox, which entered service in 2009 as part of the line’s Solstice class, typically operates European itineraries during the northern hemisphere summer season. The 2,850-passenger vessel offers a range of Mediterranean sailings from various homeports throughout the warmer months.
Rebooking Options Include Similar Mediterranean Sailings
Celebrity has presented affected passengers with multiple rebooking alternatives on similar itineraries. Guests can transfer their reservations to comparable nine-night sailings aboard the Equinox scheduled for June or September 2027.
Another option allows passengers to switch to a nine-night Italian Riviera, Spain and France voyage departing in early August 2027. This alternative maintains a similar timeframe to the original booking whilst offering a different port selection.

The cruise line has committed to protecting passengers’ original stateroom category pricing. If the current cruise fare for the alternative sailing is lower than what guests originally paid, Celebrity will reduce the price accordingly and refund the difference for reservations already paid in full.
This pricing protection ensures that affected passengers won’t face increased costs when moving to replacement sailings. The policy applies across all stateroom categories, from inside cabins through to suite accommodations.
Onboard Credit Compensation Varies By Stateroom Category
As compensation for the cancellation, Celebrity is offering non-refundable onboard credit that varies based on accommodation type. Passengers booked in Aqua Class staterooms and lower categories will receive $200 in onboard credit per stateroom.
Guests sailing in suite accommodations will receive $400 in onboard credit per stateroom, reflecting the premium nature of their original booking. The onboard credit can be used for various shipboard purchases including speciality dining, spa treatments, shore excursions and beverages.
The compensation structure recognises that suite guests typically invest more in their cruise holidays and may face greater inconvenience from itinerary changes. Celebrity specified that the credits are non-refundable but can be applied to a wide range of onboard services and amenities.
Flexible Rebooking Policy Extended To Any Celebrity Sailing
Beyond the pre-selected alternative sailings, Celebrity is waiving non-refundable deposit change fees for passengers who prefer to book any other voyage in the company’s schedule. This flexibility allows guests to choose entirely different itineraries, ships or departure dates that better suit their preferences.
Passengers selecting this option will need to cover any difference in cruise fares between their original booking and the new sailing. However, they will still receive the same onboard credit offered to those rebooking onto the suggested Mediterranean alternatives.

This policy provides maximum flexibility for guests whose schedules, budget or destination preferences may have changed since making their original reservation. The waiver of change fees removes a financial barrier that might otherwise discourage passengers from exploring different cruise options.
Full Refund Available For Those Unable To Rebook
Celebrity is offering complete refunds to passengers who cannot or prefer not to rebook on another sailing. The refund covers the full cruise fare plus any additional services purchased through the cruise line.
This option provides a straightforward exit for guests whose plans have been significantly disrupted by the cancellation. Passengers choosing this route will receive their money back without penalties or fees, though they will forfeit the onboard credit compensation offered to those who rebook.
The refund policy demonstrates Celebrity’s recognition that some passengers may have made non-refundable arrangements around the cancelled sailing, such as flights or hotels, making rebooking impractical. By offering full reimbursement, the cruise line provides an equitable solution for all affected parties.
Full-Ship Charters Increasingly Common In Cruise Industry
The cancellation stems from a full-ship charter, an arrangement where an organisation or company books an entire vessel for a private event or specialised voyage. Such charters have become increasingly common in the cruise industry, particularly as corporate events, incentive programmes and private group travel rebound post-pandemic.
Full-ship charters typically command premium pricing and can be highly lucrative for cruise lines, often explaining why scheduled passenger sailings are occasionally cancelled to accommodate them. Charter clients may include corporations hosting incentive trips, event organisers, affinity groups or even production companies filming at sea.
Whilst profitable for cruise lines, these arrangements occasionally create disruption for individual passengers who had booked the affected sailing through normal channels. Industry practice typically involves providing advance notice and compensation packages, as Celebrity has done in this instance.
Celebrity Apologises For Disruption To Passenger Plans
In its statement to affected guests, Celebrity expressed understanding that the cancellation represents a less-than-ideal situation for those who had planned their holidays around the August departure. The company apologised for the impact on passengers’ vacation plans and acknowledged the time and effort invested in organising the cruise.
“We understand that this is not an ideal situation, and we truly apologise for the impact this has on your vacation plans,” the cruise line stated. “The time and effort you took to plan your cruise is important to us, so we’ve put together some alternative options that we hope will work for you and those in your party.”
The compensation package and flexible rebooking policies represent Celebrity’s attempt to minimise inconvenience whilst maintaining goodwill with affected passengers. By offering multiple pathways – alternative sailings with price protection, open rebooking with fee waivers, or full refunds – the cruise line has provided options to suit different passenger circumstances and preferences.
