A person has died after reportedly falling from a balcony aboard Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Firenze while the ship was sailing near Catalina Island off the coast of California.

The tragic incident occurred on the morning of April 27, 2026, during a short Baja Mexico cruise sailing from Long Beach.
According to reports from NBC Los Angeles, the woman went over the railing of her balcony and fell to a lower deck on the ship. Family members alerted the crew after the incident.
The circumstances surrounding how or why the passenger went over the balcony have not yet been confirmed, and her identity has not been publicly released.
A spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line confirmed that authorities have been notified and an investigation is underway.
“All appropriate authorities have been alerted,” the spokesperson said, adding that “Carnival’s Care Team is supporting the guest’s family.”
The cruise line also confirmed that “As is customary, law enforcement will board the ship today on Catalina Island to conduct the required investigation.”
Ship Continued Its Scheduled Itinerary
At the time of the incident, Carnival Firenze was near Catalina Island, a popular cruise destination located around 22 miles southwest of Los Angeles. The island is a tender port, meaning passengers travel between the ship and shore using small tender boats rather than docking directly at a pier.
The ship had departed from the Long Beach Cruise Terminal on April 26 for a four-day cruise. Catalina Island was scheduled as the first port of call on April 27.
Following the stop, the ship departed the island later that day and continued sailing south toward Ensenada, Mexico, which is scheduled for April 28. The cruise is expected to return to Long Beach on April 30.
About Carnival Firenze
Carnival Firenze is one of the newer ships in Carnival Cruise Line’s fleet, carrying up to 4,126 guests.
The 135,156-gross-ton vessel joined the Carnival fleet in 2024 after transferring from sister brand Costa Cruises, where it previously sailed as Costa Firenze. Since the transfer, the ship has been sailing short Baja Mexico itineraries from Long Beach.
Latest Incident Follows Recent Overboard Case
The incident comes just days after another serious maritime emergency involving a cruise ship.
On April 25, a crew member from Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Breakaway went overboard off the coast of Cape Cod. A large search operation involving the US Coast Guard was launched but was suspended the following day after the crew member could not be located.
While overboard incidents and falls from cruise ships are rare, they typically trigger immediate investigations involving both cruise line officials and local law enforcement authorities.
