The Saga Cruises ship Spirit of Discovery hit stormy weather on a two-week cruise to the Canary Islands last week, which resulted in around 100 passengers suffering injuries.
While most of the injuries were considered minor and did not need significant treatment, there were a small number of guests who had to be transferred to the hospital once the ship finally docked at the end of the cruise on Monday, 6th November.
The ship was sailing a roundtrip from Portsmouth to the Canary Islands and on one of the final legs of the journey, en route to Gran Canaria, when she encountered rough seas in the Bay of Biscay, a notorious rough sea off the coast of France.
The ship tried to change plans to sail to La Coruna but the port was closed, and so the ship had to remain at sea and cope with the weather, which included winds of up to 50mph.
The conditions endured for around 18 hours, and because of the weather, the ship was unable to dock anywhere. During the worst hours, guests were asked to remain in their staterooms for their safety, and meals were delivered to them.
Spirit of Discovery was sadly caught in the challenging weather conditions this weekend, as she started her return to the UK. The ship remained safe at all times, but due to the impact of the storm some guests sustained injuries. All were treated immediately by onboard medical staff.
While the weather is clearly beyond our control, we want to offer our sincere apologies to all those affected who are now safely on their way home in calmer seas.

The cruise was cut short by one day, and injured guests were permitted to be debarked as a priority so that they could seek further medical help.
The cruise line has also stated that some form of compensation will be forthcoming, though the exact nature of that is still TBC.
