A river cruise on the Danube was dramatically interrupted in the early hours of Friday, 24th July 2026, after the river cruise ship Anna Katharina crashed into a quay wall and the Freudenau lock gate near Vienna, Austria.
The collision happened at around 4 a.m., with the 180-guest vessel reportedly striking the structure at full speed. Austrian media outlet Kronen Zeitung reported that the ship’s bow suffered extensive damage, while 14 passengers sustained minor injuries.
Emergency services confirmed that six guests were taken to hospital suffering from back, chest and neck pain. All were treated and discharged within a few hours. No serious injuries have been reported.
Images from the scene show the force of the impact severely crushed the front of the vessel, with the bow heavily deformed and an instrumentation structure at the front collapsing during the collision.
The Vienna Fire Department responded quickly, inspecting the ship to ensure nobody had fallen overboard and to assess whether the hull had been breached. Initial inspections found no one in the water, and although the vessel sustained major damage to its bow, the hull remained intact.
Anna Katharina is owned by German cruise line Phoenix Reisen and operated by Scylla AG. The 135-metre vessel accommodates up to 180 guests along with approximately 40 crew members.
According to the ship’s deck plans, the damaged bow area includes the Panorama Terrace and Lounge, a public space that was unlikely to have been occupied at the time of the accident. The galley is located towards the front of the lower decks, although it has not been confirmed whether that area also suffered damage.
Investigation Underway Into Cause Of Collision
Authorities are now investigating what led to the crash.
The vessel’s master, identified only as a 49-year-old Polish national, is expected to be questioned as investigators examine whether all operational procedures were followed and whether a technical failure may have contributed to the accident.
While mechanical issues remain one possible explanation, officials have not indicated what, if any, malfunction may have occurred. Determining the precise cause could take several weeks.
The incident has drawn comparisons with the March 2024 collision involving the container ship Dali and Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge. In that case, a catastrophic loss of power caused the vessel to drift into one of the bridge’s support structures, resulting in its collapse. At this stage, however, there is no evidence that Anna Katharina experienced a similar failure.
Following the accident, the damaged vessel was secured alongside the riverbank. Remaining passengers were transferred to another ship so they could continue their holiday.
Upcoming Cruises Could Be Affected
Anna Katharina departed Passau, Germany, on Sunday, 19th July for a seven-night roundtrip cruise through Germany, Austria, Hungary and Slovakia.
Before the accident, the vessel had been due to call at Weissenkirchen in der Wachau, Austria, on Friday afternoon, around 90 kilometres west of Vienna.
Given the extent of the damage to the ship’s bow, upcoming sailings are likely to face disruption while repairs and inspections are carried out. Guests booked on future departures are advised to remain in contact with Phoenix Reisen or their travel agent for updates as revised plans are confirmed.
Neither Phoenix Reisen nor Scylla AG had issued a public statement about the incident at the time of writing.
