Norwegian Cruise Line has officially named its sixth and final Prima Class vessel Norwegian Bella, with bookings now open for the ship’s inaugural Mediterranean season beginning in May 2028.

Norwegian Bella

The 170,000-gross-tonne vessel will homeport from Barcelona, offering primarily seven-night roundtrip voyages featuring vibrant hull art by Australian contemporary artist George Rose.

The announcement, made on 20th October 2026, marks a significant milestone for Norwegian Cruise Line as it concludes the Prima Class series that has redefined the company’s fleet offerings. Norwegian Bella represents the culmination of years of guest feedback and design innovation that began with Norwegian Prima’s debut in 2022.

The Prima Class has become Norwegian’s flagship product line, introducing revolutionary features such as Ocean Boulevard, the three-deck Infinity Beach, and an expanded Haven sanctuary. Each successive ship in the class has refined these concepts based on operational experience and passenger preferences.

Inaugural Mediterranean Programme From Barcelona

Norwegian Bella will launch her cruise career from Barcelona, Spain, operating predominantly seven-night Mediterranean itineraries throughout her maiden season. The carefully curated routes will call at some of the region’s most sought-after ports, including Salerno, Civitavecchia, Livorno, Marseille, La Spezia, and Palma de Mallorca, with specific destinations varying by departure date.

The cruise line has also scheduled a five-night positioning voyage departing Malta on 2nd May 2028, which may well serve as the vessel’s first passenger sailing. This shorter itinerary includes an overnight stay in Malta before departing the following morning, with calls at Salerno and Civitavecchia before arriving in Barcelona.

Norwegian Cruise Line has not yet designated which specific sailing will be celebrated as the official maiden voyage. Industry practice typically sees cruise lines hosting special events and distributing commemorative items across multiple early sailings during a ship’s inaugural season, allowing more guests to participate in the celebration.

Construction Progress At Fincantieri Shipyard

Norwegian Bella is currently taking shape at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, alongside her sister ship Norwegian Aura, which is scheduled for delivery in May 2027. The Italian shipbuilding facility has a longstanding relationship with Norwegian Cruise Line, having constructed numerous vessels for the brand over the past two decades.

At 1,129 feet in length, Norwegian Bella will accommodate 3,921 guests at double occupancy, making her the largest ship in Norwegian’s fleet upon debut. This distinction will be shared with Norwegian Aura and the four earlier Prima Class vessels that preceded them.

However, this title will be temporary, as Norwegian Cruise Line has already placed orders for an entirely new, larger ship class with expected deliveries beginning in 2030. These next-generation vessels will push the boundaries of size and amenities even further, though details remain closely guarded.

Striking Hull Art By George Rose

Norwegian Cruise Line has built a reputation for commissioning distinctive hull artwork across its fleet, transforming each vessel into a floating gallery piece. Norwegian Bella continues this tradition with an original design by Australian contemporary artist George Rose, whose vibrant aesthetic perfectly captures the ship’s name, which means “beautiful” in Italian.

Rose’s design features explosive splashes of tropical colours cascading across the hull, creating an organic sense of movement and flow that extends the length of the massive vessel. The artwork evokes the excitement and wonder of ocean travel through bold chromatic choices and fluid forms.

“Designing the hull art for Norwegian Bella was an opportunity to capture the sense of wonder that travel inspires. Through vibrant colour, organic forms and a feeling of movement, I wanted to create a piece that reflects the excitement of exploration and discovery,” Rose explained.

The artist’s contemporary approach differs from some of the more figurative designs seen on earlier Norwegian ships, representing an evolution in the cruise line’s artistic direction towards more abstract and emotionally evocative imagery.

Guest Feedback Shapes Final Prima Class Design

Norwegian Cruise Line has emphasised that passenger input has been instrumental in finalising Norwegian Bella’s design and feature set. After five Prima Class ships either in service or under construction, the company has accumulated substantial operational data and guest commentary about what works exceptionally well and where improvements could be made.

Marc Kazlauskas, president of Norwegian Cruise Line, highlighted this collaborative approach: “Norwegian Bella marks a milestone moment in our fleet as the culmination of our award-winning Prima Class. Drawing on the innovations and guest feedback that have shaped the class from the very beginning, Norwegian Bella brings together our most sought-after experiences in one extraordinary ship.”

This iterative design philosophy ensures that Norwegian Bella benefits from lessons learned across the entire Prima Class rollout. Features that have proved most popular with guests receive enhanced prominence, whilst less successful elements have been reimagined or expanded based on real-world usage patterns.

The cruise line’s commitment to flexibility remains central to the Prima Class concept, allowing guests to customise their holiday experiences according to individual preferences rather than following a rigid ship-wide programme.

Ocean Heights Complex And Signature Promenade

One of Norwegian Bella’s standout features will be the Ocean Heights complex, a multi-use venue spanning four decks from Deck 18 through Deck 21. This ambitious space transforms throughout the day, functioning as an adrenaline-pumping waterpark, challenging ropes course, and active playground during daylight hours.

As evening descends, Ocean Heights undergoes a dramatic metamorphosis, becoming an atmospheric social gathering spot enhanced by sophisticated LED projections and immersive lighting installations. This dual-purpose design maximises the utility of premium upper-deck real estate whilst creating distinctly different experiences for various times of day.

For passengers seeking a more tranquil connection to the ocean environment, the signature Prima Class feature Ocean Boulevard wraps around Deck 8. This innovative promenade brings guests closer to the waterline than traditional cruise ship designs, with transparent floor sections and outward-facing spaces that blur the boundary between ship and sea.

Ocean Boulevard incorporates hot tubs, an outdoor bar, and infinity pools strategically positioned to offer panoramic ocean vistas. The promenade has consistently ranked among the most photographed and praised features across the Prima Class, making its inclusion on Norwegian Bella a foregone conclusion.

Expanded Pool Deck And Family-Focused Amenities

Norwegian Bella will feature a pool deck that is more than 15% larger than those aboard Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Luna, the fourth and fifth Prima Class ships respectively. This significant expansion addresses capacity concerns whilst providing more space for the various aquatic attractions and sunbathing areas that cruise passengers prioritise.

The Kids’ Aqua Park has been reimagined with an enhanced splash pad and interactive water features designed to keep younger cruisers entertained for hours. Family-friendly attractions include the Party Slide and the Infinity Loop, an exciting figure-eight waterslide that has become a Prima Class signature.

For adventurous guests who prefer to stay dry, Norwegian Bella will offer the iconic 10-deck “The Drop” slide, which sends riders plummeting through a transparent tube that extends over the side of the ship. Additional activities include lawn games, miniature golf, and various sports courts scattered throughout the upper decks.

The cruise line has developed comprehensive youth programming across three age-specific venues. Little Explorers’ Cay caters to children aged two to six with playhouses and slides, Adventure Alley serves six to ten-year-olds with winding ocean-themed tunnels, and Surf’s Bay provides teenagers with their own space including a surf-themed photo wall for social media content.

Adults-Only Spaces And The Haven Sanctuary

Recognising that many passengers seek peaceful retreats away from family activities, Norwegian Bella will feature dedicated adults-only areas. The Vibe Beach Club continues its role as an elevated sanctuary with its own oceanfront bar, infinity hot tubs, and comfortable day beds arranged for optimal relaxation and ocean viewing.

The Haven Norwegian Bella NCL

The Mandara Spa & Salon promises the ultimate in pampering and rejuvenation with facilities including a meditation room, spa reflection pool, and thermal suite. These wellness-focused amenities reflect the growing cruise industry trend towards comprehensive health and relaxation programming that extends beyond traditional spa treatments.

The Haven represents the pinnacle of luxury accommodation aboard Norwegian Bella, comprising 159 suites located aft with access via private elevators. This ship-within-a-ship concept has become Norwegian’s signature premium product, offering an exclusive experience that rivals boutique luxury cruise lines.

The Haven is divided into separate family-friendly and adults-only sections, acknowledging the diverse needs of suite guests. A private sundeck features an infinity pool, two hot tubs, and exclusive amenities including an outdoor sauna and cold room – a first for the Norwegian fleet.

Haven guests enjoy access to a private restaurant, dedicated lounge spaces, and 24-hour butler and concierge service. Nearly 2,000 staterooms across Norwegian Bella will range from inside cabins and innovative solo accommodations to ocean-view rooms, balconies, and The Haven’s luxurious suites, ensuring options for every budget and preference.

Future Details And Growing Anticipation

Whilst Norwegian Cruise Line has revealed the foundational elements of Norwegian Bella, significant details remain under wraps. Information about the ship’s dining venues, theatrical entertainment, musical performances, and other experiential offerings will be released progressively over the coming months.

This staged announcement strategy builds sustained excitement and media attention as the 2028 debut approaches. Previous Prima Class ships have featured partnerships with celebrity chefs, innovative dining concepts, and cutting-edge entertainment technology, setting high expectations for what Norwegian Bella will ultimately deliver.

The cruise line’s decision to homeport the vessel in Barcelona for her inaugural season demonstrates confidence in the Mediterranean market and the enduring appeal of this historic region. Barcelona has become one of Europe’s premier cruise hubs, offering excellent air connectivity and serving as an attractive pre- or post-cruise destination in its own right.

As Norwegian Bella represents the conclusion of the Prima Class series, her design and feature set will likely influence the next generation of Norwegian ships already on order. The lessons learned and innovations perfected across these six vessels will inform the cruise line’s future direction as it continues evolving to meet changing passenger expectations and industry standards.
