Disney Cruise Line’s expansion into Japan has reached a significant milestone with the unveiling of Disney Imagination, a new cruise ship scheduled to begin sailing from Tokyo in spring 2029.

The vessel will become the first ship in Disney Cruise Line Japan, a Disney-branded cruise operation managed by Oriental Land Group, the company behind Tokyo Disney Resort.

Announced on 14th October 2026, the ship will accommodate approximately 4,000 passengers across 1,250 staterooms and operate short cruises from Tokyo International Cruise Terminal.

The project represents a different approach to Disney Cruise Line’s existing operations, with the new vessel being developed specifically for the Japanese market under a licensing agreement between Disney and Oriental Land.

Disney Imagination will be based on the design of Disney Wish and form part of the Wish class, although its onboard experiences and facilities are being developed with Japanese passengers in mind.

The announcement also revealed new details about the ship’s entertainment, dining facilities and exterior design, while further information about its itineraries and individual attractions is expected closer to launch.

Disney Imagination To Offer Short Cruises From Tokyo

Oriental Land plans to operate Disney Imagination primarily on two to four-night cruises departing from and returning to Tokyo International Cruise Terminal.

The short itineraries are intended to introduce Disney’s cruise experience to the Japanese market, where cruising remains less established than in countries such as the United States.

Specific ports of call have not yet been announced, and it remains unclear whether the initial itineraries will include visits to other destinations or focus on round-trip voyages from Tokyo.

Early pricing estimates suggest that standard accommodation will cost approximately ¥100,000 to ¥400,000 per person, depending on the sailing and stateroom selected.

These figures are preliminary rather than confirmed fares, with full pricing and booking arrangements still to be announced.

Reservations are expected to open approximately six months before the ship enters service, potentially placing the booking launch in late 2028.

Disney Imagination will measure approximately 340 metres in length and have a gross tonnage of around 140,000 GT.

Oriental Land has allocated approximately ¥330 billion towards the project, including ¥290 billion for the vessel itself and ¥40 billion in contingency funding.

The ship is expected to carry approximately 1,500 crew members and is planned to operate under the Japanese flag.

Construction is taking place at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, where work on the vessel’s lower hull sections began in October 2026.

Delivery is currently anticipated in autumn 2028, allowing time for preparations ahead of the planned spring 2029 launch.

New Entertainment, Restaurants And Disney Characters Revealed

Disney Imagination will feature a range of entertainment and dining facilities, including a theatre with seating for more than 1,300 passengers.

The venue will host original stage productions, while additional Disney character performances are planned for an outdoor deck stage.

Character encounters and activities will also take place throughout the ship, with Disney characters appearing in specially designed cruise costumes.

Dining facilities will include approximately 30 restaurants, cafés and bars.

Three main dining restaurants will each feature a different theme and menu, allowing passengers to experience different settings during their cruise.

The ship will also include shops selling merchandise exclusive to Disney Imagination, alongside dedicated children’s activity areas and adults-only spaces.

Although the broad range of facilities has been outlined, Disney has not yet confirmed the individual names and themes of the restaurants, entertainment venues or other major attractions.

One distinctive feature already confirmed is the artwork that will appear on the ship’s stern.

Ariel from Disney’s The Little Mermaid will be depicted alongside Sebastian and other characters from the film, using a dinglehopper to draw the ship’s name.

The design continues Disney Cruise Line’s tradition of featuring Disney characters on the stern of its vessels.

According to Disney, the name Imagination was selected to reflect the creativity and storytelling associated with its entertainment experiences.

The company has not yet revealed whether the Japanese vessel will feature the same attractions and dining concepts found aboard other Wish-class ships or introduce entirely different experiences.

Disney Cruise Line’s Expansion Into Japan

Disney Imagination is the result of an agreement announced in July 2024 between Disney and Oriental Land to establish a dedicated Disney cruise operation in Japan.

Although the ship will carry Disney Cruise Line branding, the Japanese business will be operated by Oriental Land rather than directly by Disney Cruise Line’s existing cruise operation.

The arrangement builds on the relationship between the two companies, which already sees Oriental Land operating Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea under licence from Disney.

For Oriental Land, cruising represents an opportunity to establish a new business alongside its theme park and hotel operations.

The company has outlined ambitions for its cruise division to attract approximately 400,000 passengers annually and generate around ¥100 billion in annual revenue within several years of beginning operations.

Those figures remain business targets rather than confirmed future results.

Oriental Land has also indicated that it could consider introducing a second cruise ship once the first vessel has established a successful operation.

Natacha Rafalski, president of Disney Signature Experiences, described the unveiling as an important development in Disney’s relationship with Oriental Land.

“Today’s announcement of the Disney Imagination marks a significant milestone in the continued expansion of Disney Cruise Line and in our long-standing relationship with Oriental Land Group,” she said.

“We are honored to extend the magic of Disney cruising to fans in new markets and create opportunities for Japanese guests to experience a Disney vacation at sea.”

The Japanese venture comes as Disney Cruise Line continues a wider programme of fleet expansion.

The company is preparing to introduce Disney Believe in December 2027, another Wish-class ship that will operate Caribbean and Bahamian itineraries from Port Everglades in Florida.

Disney has also announced plans to expand its fleet to 13 ships, with additional vessels scheduled to enter service in the coming years.

Disney Imagination will occupy a distinct position within that expansion, serving as the first Disney-branded cruise ship developed specifically for a Japanese operation.

The vessel will also provide Oriental Land with an opportunity to introduce Disney cruising to passengers who may already be familiar with the company’s theme parks but have not previously taken a Disney cruise.

Further announcements are expected to confirm the ship’s individual attractions, restaurants, itinerary details and booking arrangements before its scheduled introduction in spring 2029.
