A British couple have spoken out after being confined to their cabin for six days during a Northern Lights cruise, claiming they were wrongly diagnosed with a gastrointestinal illness despite showing no symptoms.

Speaking to The Mirror, Anne Parsons, 83, and her husband John, 75, explained how they spent £5,000 of their savings on a 10-day voyage aboard Fred Olsen Cruise Lines’ Balmoral, departing from Newcastle on 3rd March 2026.
Instead of enjoying their trip to Norway, the pair say they were isolated for much of the sailing due to what they insist were misdiagnosed conditions.
The couple, who travelled from Gloucestershire to join the cruise, found their holiday disrupted shortly after departure when Anne began feeling unwell after drinking alcohol that she says reacted badly with her medication. Despite her explanation, onboard staff determined she had gastroenteritis and ordered her into isolation.
Anne said she was instructed to remain in her cabin for three days, with no opportunity to leave. Documentation provided to the couple stated she had been diagnosed with gastrointestinal symptoms and was being confined due to “acute gastroenteritis”.
She maintains that no medical tests or examinations were carried out to confirm the diagnosis.
Isolation Extended After Second Incident
According to documents seen by the Mirror, Anne’s isolation lasted from the evening of 5th March until the afternoon of 7th March. However, just as she was due to be released, further complications arose.

The ship encountered rough weather, during which John became seasick after falling out of bed. Anne claims this was again misinterpreted by staff as gastroenteritis, leading to him also being placed in isolation.
John’s confinement lasted from the early hours of 7th March until the morning of 9th March. In total, the couple say they spent six days confined to their cabin, missing multiple planned excursions.

Anne described the experience as an “absolute disaster”, adding that daily announcements from the captain confirmed a growing number of illness cases onboard throughout the voyage.
The outbreak follows a similar incident earlier in 2026, when around 200 passengers reportedly fell ill during another Balmoral sailing in the Norwegian fjords.
Compensation Offer Rejected By Passengers
Following the trip, the couple were offered compensation in the form of a future cruise discount worth £179.90, described by the company as a gesture of goodwill for complying with isolation procedures.
However, Anne said the offer fell far short of addressing the disruption to their holiday and confirmed they have no intention of booking another cruise.
She also criticised what she described as dismissive behaviour from staff, claiming her attempts to explain the true cause of their symptoms were ignored.
In response, a spokesperson for Fred Olsen Cruise Lines said that passenger health and safety remain the company’s top priority. The cruise line stated that any guests displaying symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal illness are required to isolate as a precaution to prevent wider outbreaks.
The company added that affected passengers receive support during isolation, including medical assessments, welfare checks, and delivery of meals and essentials. It also confirmed that compensation is typically offered in the form of a future cruise voucher equivalent to 50 percent of the daily fare for time spent in isolation.
Ongoing Concerns Around Cruise Illness Protocols
The incident highlights ongoing concerns among passengers about how cruise lines handle illness outbreaks at sea, particularly when diagnoses are made quickly to limit transmission.
Strict isolation policies are standard practice across the cruise industry, especially in response to highly contagious conditions such as norovirus. However, cases like this may raise questions about how accurately symptoms are assessed and whether passengers are given adequate opportunity to challenge medical decisions.
For Anne and John Parsons, the experience has left a lasting impression, with the couple saying their long-awaited trip turned into a distressing ordeal they now wish they had never taken.
