On 29 August 2024, at around 11:25 a.m. local time, Sitka experienced a major outage of internet and mobile services. GCI Alaska, the main internet and mobile service provider in the area, confirmed the outage shortly after it began.
The company identified the cause and began assessing the damage. The outage is expected to last for about two weeks, significantly impacting daily life and business operations in Sitka.
The problem arose from a break in an important underwater fibre optic cable located about 30 miles off the coast of Sitka. The break in the cable has severed the connection, resulting in the loss of both internet and mobile services.
Repairing such a break is very challenging. Underwater fibre optic cables are complex and require specialised equipment and skills to repair. GCI Alaska has mobilised its resources to address the issue.
The company is working with specialised teams to repair the underwater cable and restore service as quickly as possible.
